Scene From a Coffeehouse

A  L  O  H  A   from  San Francisco
"Old friends.
Winter companions,
The old men
Lost in their overcoats,
Waiting for the sunset.
The sounds of the city,
Sifting through trees,
Settle like dust
On the shoulders
Of the old friends."
Paul Simon,
'Old Friends'

“This land is your land, this land is my land,
From California to the New York island,
 From the redwood forest
to the Gulf Stream waters,
This land was made for you and me”
                         Woody Guthrie

It is impossible to convey the
vast scale of this Marin mountainside.
Do you see the tiny fence in the upper left?
The corner of the fence is pointing at
hikers on a trail. See them?
They are enlarged below

On one side: The Bay.
Bordering the West:

Goose Omen Fence

A  L  O  H  A !

Click on the Geese. They LIKE it!
The geese
have always been
my especial friends.
They flew over my childhood house
when I was little, honking.
Even then I always
regarded it as a good sign.
My first Omen.

They have shown up
reliably to point the
way, to reassure me
throughout life.

Now they are here too,
sharing this wetland, No longer
distant and passing in an instant,
but landing and eating and living
close by. I can hear them
approaching low overhead talking,
disputing, advising one another:
"You were admiral LAST time!"

But they are telling me:
"We are home, and so are you."
[Honk]
They've never lied to me before!

they are deep-down optimists.
They have to be, because

walk in and hand them money.”
