Deity Presents Itself

A  L  O  H  A !
 Across the Nu`uanu Canal
in Honolulu's Chinatown,
you will discover
IZUMO TAISHAKYO
Mission Of Hawaii since 1906.
[Shinto]

Entering the sacred and magical precincts
"Sacred places are typically marked
with a shimenawa (special plaited rope).
Shimenawa mark the boundary
between the sacred and the profane.
They keep impurities out and
purify the space within.

Guardians
 Shishi 獅子  or Koma-inu
(lion-dogs)

"If we keep un-perverted
the human heart
—which is like unto heaven
and received from the earth—
that is God."

Shake the rope -ring the bell
That is a big wide Shimenawa
rope at the top!

John Wayne filmed a scene for
'Big Jim McClain' here in 1952.

"Even the wishes of an
ant reach to heaven."

Let There Be Light

"The best and surest way
to be one with the
divine is sincerity."

Shinto paper lightening bolts
'Shide'
bring down the natural
energies from Heaven.

Mundane tools to
maintain the sacred.
Note the SAKE case
and brooms.
Sake is used in ceremonies.

Back when this area was
Honolulu's Japantown,
the TOYO Theater echoed
the architecture of the Shrine
just up the block

'Still' from Big Jim McLain filmed at the Mission

"Even in one single leaf on a tree,
or in one blade of grass,
 the awesome Deity presents itself."
