Manu O Ku -White Terns-
live in Honolulu's trees, laying
their eggs in a crook
of the branches.
They do not build nests.
When they have young,
the adults go to sea to
fish as usual, but they
bring small fish back to feed
their chicks. Sometimes
they drop one!
Like this flying fish!
Cheilopogon pinnatibarbatus,
Bennett's flying fish,
a species of flying fish which
has a circumglobal distribution
in tropical and subtropical seas.
known in Hawaiian as mālolo.

Seriously? They lay their eggs in the crooks of branches? With all the winds we've been having and bad weather, that would not have been safe. Wow!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend, Cloudia!
Beautiful little blue birdie beaks. Won't they come back to fetch it? Hmmmm, too crowded for their sensitivities probably. Pixie would like it, eh? Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteLaying in tree branches is quite an adaptation.
ReplyDelete...I'm actually a plant guy!
ReplyDeleteHope someone's babes got the fish finally. Love to you and sweet Pixie!
ReplyDeleteThose are lovely birds. I wonder how many baby terns fall from the trees, Cloudia. ;-)
ReplyDeleteFascinating facts about these birds, Cloudia. And yes, loving animals makes us fully human. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful birds. I know other birds here in Oklahoma that lay their eggs in exposed locations.
ReplyDeleteAdaptation is often mysterious, but if a species keeps coming back one has to guess that they have a way to stay in the world. At least until their world changes (which usually is because of us)
ReplyDeleteIt's a wonder the terns haven't gone extinct.
ReplyDeleteThat drink syrup looks yummy.
