A Korean company has decided to build electric cars
right here on Oahu!

How will I EVER tell Walking Man?!

CT&T's Hawaii manufacturing plant

could generate 400 jobs

Pacific Business News (Honolulu)

A South Korean carmaker plans to build a $200 million all-electric car assembly plant at an as-yet-undisclosed location in Hawaii in a move that could generate up to 400 jobs.

Seoul-based CT&T, an international electric car manufacturer, has signed a deal with the state to build a three-acre plant and educational center on Oahu.

The manufacturing facility, estimated to cost up to $50 million, will be able to build 10,000 cars annually. The manufacturer is considering four sites on the island and expects construction to begin within 18 to 24 months.

In the meantime, the company will start to import a fleet of electric vehicles fully assembled for sale. “In addition to the jobs we’ll provide, there may be as many as 1,000 jobs from the ripple effect of our factory being built here,” said Joe White, chief operating officer of CT&T USA. “The state is poised for the type of vehicles we produce.”

Hawaii’s lower speed limits fit perfectly with CT&T’s cars, he said.

Its two-seat C-Zone model sells for between $8,000 and $13,000, while the E-Zone model costs between $12,000 and $20,000.

The agreement is in line with the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative, which aims to have 70 percent of the state’s energy generated from clean sources by 2030. Established in 2002, CT&T manufactures electric, hybrid and fuel-cell vehicles.

  7. There is a difference between building cars and assembling them. The building of them will be done in their joint venture plant in China and the assembly will be done in HA. This is simply to get around some import tariffs on completed vehicles coming into the US market.

After looking at the car, it doesn't look to bad, 75 miles on a charge with a top speed of about 60 MPH. Priced a lot cheaper than a Volt but then the Volt is not evolved golf cart technology.

But as a Detroiter, *shrug* we don't make much of anything here anymore. Most of those jobs wound up somewhere else decades ago. We are going back to an agrarian based culture here locally.

We like old Hank said don't stop learning we adapt.

  17. wow, that sounds amazing, soon hawaii will be full of affordable electric cars! and also i feel like successful taxi driving often lends itself to the first henry ford quote-never find fault always a solution: as there is no time to dwell on what's wrong, but only how to fix it. this makes sense as i kind of see taxi driving as capitalism in its purist state, well, until you break it down and realize that many others make money off the industry without doing much work.

And leave it to Walking Man to note the important aspects of this deal...Yes, an island is perfect for electric cars. Now I hear that hydrogen cars are coming here.

As a former taxi driver, I enjoyed the taxi reflections above. Don't forget to get my book "Aloha Where You Like Go?" at Amazon.com :)
