ALOHA !
Has it been Ten Years?
We all remember
where we were
on that day
The Anniversary
of the September 11th Attack
brings up lots of emotions.
On that day, we knew that life
would never be the same.
At that time
we were human,
we were Americans,
we were Free People
All of Us - all around the world.
Together.
We were not right-wing, or left-wing;
We ran up our country's flag
in the thousands,
everywhere,
in the thousands,
everywhere,
and we loved each other.
While I dreaded this weekend
for the memories it would stir,
something unexpected has arisen.
The survivors, the rescuers, the widows
and the orphans
are once again in the spotlight
And instead of inconsolable pain
what I feel is how Magnificent they are,
how beautiful people are
when we remember what is really
important.
So instead of feeling pain,
I identify these strong emotions
as gratitude
and admiration.
Instead of feeling loss,
I feel surprising wonder
as I say to myself:
'How magnificent people are!'
" Many decry our current divided politics
but I see it another way;
this is a democracy
and we disagree, and we fight
for what we believe in.
But when a September 11th happens
we remember what counts
and we all pull together. "

ReplyDeleteMagnificent is a perfect word for the human spirit shown that day, today, and on so many ordinary days by ordinary people

Such a beautiful poem on that blog (Out & About in New York City).
ReplyDeleteDid you know that there is a French writer, Frederic Beigbeder, who wrote a book called "Windows on the World", published in 2003 in French, and subsequently translated in English in 2005. It is written as describing events and memories as seen through the eyes of a father of 2 little boys, who happenned to be with his sons taking breakfast that morning in that restaurant from the top floor of the North Tower, from the moment of the impact of the plane to the moment of the catastrophic desintegration of that beautiful building. The text has a poignant lyrical poetical style, and I remember it helped me personally grieve.
In spite of the modern tendency to encourage "closure" in cases of mourning, I would like to comment that the mourning time is indefinite when one loses a child...and in a way America lost some of its children in a very brutal and unexpected manner that day.
I hope the next ten years are somehow better than the last.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry.

ReplyDeleteAs a nursing student in maternity clinicals, on 9-11 a baby was born. The parents had previously chosen a name, but named her "Hope" to have faith that the world would go on. DrumMajor
