Why Positive Thinking Doesn't Work

A L O H A !

If it was easy to choose how we feel,

we'd all be happy ALL of the time.

If you say positive affirmations
that are too far from your real view of life
you won't believe them.

In fact,
what will arise in your mind?

All the obstacles
that you know so well.

SURE it would be great
if that affirmation was true
but how does that help
me?

But wouldn't it be great
if this one annoying situation
or person
was just a little
less annoying?

Sure it would be!

Now there's a positive
statement
that you can believe
 in your gut!

You know that you are probably
NOT getting better
EVERY day
in EVERY way.

But wouldn't it be great
if you were on time today?

If a certain someone is there-
or not?

What about a new job,
or a raise in pay,
wouldn't that be
great?

There.

THERE'S your affirmation
that works!

Makes you feel JUST
a little better,
doesn't it?
And that better feeling
is really what you WANT
to be feeling.

Possibilities
present themselves
when you're
feeling better.

Now that's
positive.

  2. There's an exercise they used to do at the Dale Carnegie course in which you repeat over and over, "If you ACT enthusiastic, then you'll BE enthusiastic!" I have found that to work at times, but not when I had that crazy job at a law firm. :)

  3. negative thinking is bad but positive thinking can often be meaningless. I said so in one of my more thoughtful posts some time ago.

A positive attitude, which allows you to drag yourself out of the hole by DOING something, now that is POSITIVE.

  4. I would actually go a little beyond Friko's post, with which I tend to agree, by saying that by doing something meaningful for someone else is also a way out of a personal funk. And it is on a British website that I found a very common sense 5 step program for general Wellbeing (see page 2), which actually emphasizes communication, connection & giving, rather than sort of brooding by oneself on oneself alone:

    Beer helps with that!

    LOL!!!!!
I often use my imagination to relieve the stress in dealing with buttholes, buts its best for me not to go into the details.

  7. I am a Nichiren Daishonin Buddhist. At my first meeting, though, I asked that same question. "Why do I have to chant. Why not just think positive thoughts?" The leader of the group said that positive thinking is OK, but that it keep you in the realm of your mind. Which as you know sometimes vacillates. Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, on the other hand, manifests your Buddha nature - honoring the person you are, revering your own life, which then brings about positive change is your life. And thats REAL life. We Buddhists don't run from our obstacles - we look them squarely in the face, challenge them and win over them. Cheers!!

  8. Just repaird our bed which was broken nearly as long as we live in this house.
During midday thought that i might even have 'fixed' a bit of karma as well.
Who knows thinking might even be done by furniture ;) Thank you for this nice proof to look at such small things.

Please have you all a good Friday.
