He and I
had been together
for years.
What would
marriage
add?
Just a piece of paper,
right?
And what about
those who cannot
be married?
Nonetheless
a new century
seemed the time.
We went to the judge
at his lunchtime.
One handful of friends
were there.
I figure we started our
marriage
$30,000 ahead
that way.
Things sure felt
different afterward.
I felt different.
So did he.
I felt different.
So did he.
I don't know why.
We both felt it.
The next morning
before awakening
I 'dreamed' of being
in an old fashioned room.
Women
whose faces I couldn't see
sat around the perimeter.
Light poured in through
windows,
but I could discern nothing
through them.
These women
were my ancestresses;
somehow I simply knew that;
Grandma, Auntie
who I had known,
& further back
who I'd never
met.
A hand,
an old woman's hand,
manicured,
gnarled, familiar-
handed me a small plate.
On that plate:
a slice of
Honey Cake.
Honey Cake!
Like grandma used to bring!
Hadn't thought of it
in years.
Hadn't SEEN it
longer.
Later that day
we were shopping
at the usual place.
And there on the shelf
a new item,
or simply never noticed before:
Honey Cake!
I remembered
the 'dream.'
I knew it was the welcome
of the women
in my line;
When I became
a married lady
somehow
I joined their
ranks.
Honey Cake. . .
We'll sit together
in that room,
drinking tea
and sharing
Honey Cake.
Not a bad way
to spend
some Heaven.
What will you
do? eat? share?
with YOUr ancestors
later?
Please share in comments.
And thanks so much for visiting!
Warmly, cloudia
I don't know is the short answer to your question. I do not know who my parent's really were (both of them lied) and I certainly don't know anyone further back.
ReplyDeletePerhaps introductions would be in order.
Great post - beautiful photos, quotes and soul behind them. Thank you.
that's fer sure, you do save a bundle. And congrads of course.
ReplyDeleteAwesome post, darling!

Love those quotes at top. And that dream was perfect - I do believe you were sent a message. My mother passed away on February 5 and my dad passed away two years ago. She had been calling his name in her sleep lately and I imagined quite a reunion taking place when she joined him. I think they will wrap their arms around me.
ReplyDeleteLovely pictures with nice colors....good work Cloudia.
ReplyDeleteWarm greetings, Joop
A beautiful post.
ReplyDeleteYour wedding is all I'd wanted 32 years ago but I had the larger one anyway.
I don't have real connections to my ancestors. I barely met my grandfathers and never met my grandmothers. There are no special foods handed down.
But if a tradition can be handed backwards, then my children would likely choose cheesecake and maybe baklava.
Has this just happened Cloudia, if so CONGRATULATIONS!! I love the way you did it too, so you, cool! btw that second image gave me a great idea for a new exercise routine haha!!
ReplyDeletemundoo, of course! I am Korean, after all.
ReplyDeletetrekking your blog!!!
ReplyDeletecheers!
..TREK..
Interesting ... yesterday I shared time with my young cousin .. we visited the cemetery to say hello to her grandparents - my special uncle and aunt - its been 2 yrs since The Aunt passed .. my cousin and I had been to see her 2 days before she passed ..last winter was too snowy and Toonman was in hospital so I didnt go .. Erica, my cousin, brought The Aunt (Erica's Grandmother) a cup of black coffee and poured it into the ground ... I know The Aunt was appreciative .. she loved us and her coffee ... we adored her

ReplyDeleteThis post warms my heart Cloudia, you had a wonderful celebration, not only in marriage but in your dream. When I meet those I have loved and lost, I will tell them how much I have missed them, but that they were never very far away from me, always in my memories.
ReplyDeleteI know maybe it's silly but I know my loved ones are right there above me all the time... I had to smile at how happy those three words made me feel (before reading any great quotes) Honey Cake Dream! # all time fave words! Thanks for being so sweet everyday Cloudia! ;)
ReplyDeleteI Pray I just don't embarrass them too much--or at all!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post--and tell that guy in the 2nd pic to quit trying to pull it down!!!
Love ya Sis!!
Marriage is da bomb! We went to the judge!!! 15 minutes and bada bing bada boom--32 years later we still hate each other!! NOT!

I had a dream once about my ancestresses visiting my daughter while I slept and taking her from her crib and taking turns holding her and making her a part of their story. Your post makes me think of that essential wonder at love and connection and relationship. Wow. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteCool visions, Cloudia! Aren't dreams amazing, and why?
ReplyDeleteMy family food is apple dumplings, from the grandma's recipie. A whole, cored apple wrapped in a dough square. I "took over" making them when I was 13. Everytime I made them for a guy I was dating, we'd end up married. Don't do that anymore.

The wedding was a decade ago, but the dream seems like just yesterday-
ReplyDeleteThank YOU
Sushi for sure!
ReplyDeleteYou did save a ton that you could then put toward retirement.
Now I wish my son would follow your example. They've been together 8 years.
Congrats on a nostalgic post and congrats on your POTW.
ReplyDeletePOTW from Hilary is a great thank you for a post that resonates with every woman reading it. Lovely

Honey Cake -- what a lovely piece.
ReplyDeleteMy ancestors will be sitting around a large, farm-style table: beef roast, mashed potatoes and gravy, rolls, cole slaw, strawberry shortcake for dessert, and again it will be the best meal I've ever eaten. :-)

i love messages like this from dreams. :) congrats on your POTW!
ReplyDeleteVery nice, a celebration of life. I want a slice of that honey cake.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant purple sky. Well-done.
ReplyDeleteOh what heart felt feelings I sensed in reading your words. Each clinging to me with meaning.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on being selected as POTW; thank you for sharing a slice of "Honey Cake Dream" with us.
what a beautiful post Claudia, through and through. I have dreams of my beloved Aunts and Grandmothers at times. My favorite was my Great Aunt Bella who gave me a red plastic handbag, the kind with handles and a clasp closure. When I opened the bag a large green frog hopped out! I still don't really understand what these symbols meant, but I had a sense that she wanted me to open my heart and live my life with as much fullness and vivaciousness as possible.
ReplyDelete(I loved my grandmother's honey cake too!)
