After the final session
of the Constitutional Convention
of 1787,
Dr. James McHenry,
one of Maryland’s delegates,
overheard a lady
ask exiting delegate
Benjamin Franklin:
“Well, Doctor,
what have we got—
a Republic
or a Monarchy?”
He answered:
He answered:
“ A Republic,
if you can keep it. ”
" Behind the ostensible government
sits enthroned
an
invisible government
owing no allegiance
and acknowledging
no
responsibility
to the people.
"
Theodore Roosevelt ,
USA President
" The government is us;
we are the government,
you and I.
"
Theodore Roosevelt

ReplyDeleteA tortured history, indeed: just having seen bloody fields of action between Loyalists/Tories and Patriots/Rebels back in North Carolina, Americans all hacking away at each other straight through the American Civil War and Civil Rights movement and now through this year's election, albeit with more words and policies than bullets and bayonets, in 2012.
Well, Roosevelt was correct, in his day, but today...not so much.
ReplyDeleteHappy 4th to you and yours.
Indeed it does. Thanks for the reminder that nobody among us need think he or she is better than the rest or has better knowledge or insight. Let's stand with the people who are working hard to make this grand experiment work.
