who is fond of
olden times

" Some are so very
studious
of learning what was done
by the ancients
that they know not
how to live
with the
moderns.

“ Reflection is
a flower of the mind,

giving out
wholesome fragrance ”
Desiderius Erasmus
“ But who will watch my lilies,
When their blossoms open white?
By day the sun shall be sentry,
And the moon and the stars by night!”
Bayard Taylor
" The snowdrop and primrose
our woodlands adorn,
and violets bathe
in the wet o' the morn.

Ah the ancients.
How did they do it?
Building things,
unimaginably heavy
things;
Voyaging
across oceans
vast.
How?
Modern theories are often
untested-
Old stories
tell of magic
and gods.
There is a stone
not far from here
at the gates of Punahou School
that our president passed
daily there
as a school boy.
Actually, the stone
by the gate
is just a fragment
of the original
Pohaku.

There remains
an old legend
about the moving
of the great Pohaku:
" This is not a stone,
it is a man "
it is a man "

sounds cool, right?
Well below is a video
of a large stone
"walking"
with the help of
some friends
right here
on this island.
right here
on this island.
It may clear up
an enduring mystery
about the great Moai
of Rapa Nui.

Thank YOU
for 'walking' here today

I am happy for some things to remain mysteries, including (but not limited to) how the pyramids and Machu Pichu were built.
ReplyDeleteIt would probably behoove us all to realize that a thousand years forward if there is anyone there left who wishes to study us that we may wish to leave different traces of ourselves buried in the dirt.
ReplyDeletethat is pretty cool on the walking statues and all well and good til it falls over...bet its hard to get back up....i agree though we can not spend all our time looking back...

The growth of civilization is always a wonder!! Lovely post Cloudia!
ReplyDeleteA nice little delight to see a plumeria blossom. Studying the ancients develops a respect for the path taken of those standing before us. DrumMajor

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have thought of that "walking statue idea but it sure makes some sense. It's like the way you get a fridge out of the house.
ReplyDeleteGood morning Cloudia, Most times living with the moderns isn't as refreshing as walking with the ancients for sure! Enjoy your weekend, and hug those animals, nearest you!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter's first kitty (Calli) looked so much like this one!
The ancients. They haunt us, teach us. May we learn the lessons. Love your post.
