A L O H A !
" Tolerance implies
no lack of commitment
to one's own beliefs.
Rather it condemns
the oppression
or persecution
of others. "
John F. Kennedy
" What is tolerance?
It is the consequence of
humanity.
We are all formed
of frailty and error;
let us pardon
reciprocally
each others' folly -
that is the first law
of nature. "
Voltaire
" Tolerance is giving
to every other
human being
every right
that you claim
for yourself. "
Robert Green Ingersoll
" I think more tolerance,
more people having more access
to a chance to be literate,
and a chance to stay healthy
makes for a more
peaceful planet."
Henry Rollins
" The responsibility
of tolerance
lies with those
who have the
wider vision. "
George Eliot

Tolerating the Other,
the Different,
means you are still
means you are still
seeing
Other, Difference.
Other, Difference.
This is a but
a way-station
from intolerance.
When you forget
about Race, Class,
Difference,
They forget
about You.
Then,
from intolerance.
When you forget
about Race, Class,
Difference,
They forget
about You.
Then,
there is no
Other
in the
Other
in the
WE
that arises.
that arises.

That is the best quote for me and sums up my belief. On a darker side its scary how many people, including those who think themselves rational and civilized people, can rationalize mistreatment and dehumanization of others different from them.
There's a lot of people down here (south carolina) that could use some more tolerance. Acceptance would be preferred.
ReplyDeletea great post. good thoughts to ponder.
ReplyDeleteWonderful post!
ReplyDeleteI'm a pretty tolerant guy. I like to think at least.

Some days I am pretty good with it, other days, not so much. But I work on it.
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed the difference, which unites.
ReplyDeletePlease have a good Sunday you all.
It's a "big picture" thought to realize that maybe, just maybe, my way, our way, is not necessarily the best way, i.e. other religions, acupuncture, non-western medicine. Hmmmm, open the mind, learn about "those different people," appreciate, tolerate, accept.

What beautiful perspectives of the yellow blossoms, I almost forget to read your wonderful quotes.
ReplyDeleteYour images and words are wonderful. You remind me to be tolerant of the blue-eyed Speaker of the House oddball who thinks he's in charge around here.
