Rainbow Ladder |
the refracted light
through whom is splintered
from a single White
to many hues,
and endlessly combined
in living shapes
that move
from mind to mind. ”
J.R.R. Tolkien
That vertical 'rainbow' is called a
'Sun Dog'
or Parhelion.
They appear when light rays
pass through high cirrus clouds
containing horizontal hexagonal ice crystals.
The ice crystals in the clouds act as prisms.

I shot this Sun Dog over the Pacific
from Waikiki.
This was the first time I've noticed one!
It appeared two afternoons in a row.
Perhaps I shan't see another
for many years
when conditions are again
perfect.

This fellow got REALLY lucky!
Definitely worth 2 minutes of your time:
Those are lovely shots.. and in our busy lives, we rarely have time to look up at the sky. Good that you captured them.

I have never seen a sun dog Cloudia but shall now look out for one.
ReplyDeleteCould need some sun here, too....just a bit. It is wet and cold here, what makes all quite miserable. It snows and the roads are icy. Hard to drive.
ReplyDeleteWinter in Germany is a big defiance; never really Winterwonderland.....

ReplyDeleteNew "breed" for me! WOW! Sun dogs frolicking and rolling around, and sitting up. I prefer the warm Waikiki one to the cold sled-Sun dog. Mahalo for walkin' the dog. I think Tolkien was a tall menehune. DrumMajor
