Sun Dogs

A   L   O   H   A  !

Rainbow  Ladder

“ Man, Sub-creator,
the refracted light
through whom is splintered
from a single White
to many hues,
and endlessly combined
in living shapes
that move
from mind to mind. ”

 J.R.R. Tolkien

That vertical 'rainbow' is called a
 'Sun Dog'
 or Parhelion.
They appear when light rays
 pass through high cirrus clouds
containing horizontal hexagonal ice crystals.

The ice crystals in the clouds act as prisms.

I shot this Sun Dog over the Pacific
 from Waikiki.
This was the first time I've noticed one!

It appeared two afternoons in a row.

Perhaps I shan't see another
for many years
when conditions are again
perfect.

  1. Those are lovely shots.. and in our busy lives, we rarely have time to look up at the sky. Good that you captured them.

  4. Could need some sun here, too....just a bit. It is wet and cold here, what makes all quite miserable. It snows and the roads are icy. Hard to drive.
Winter in Germany is a big defiance; never really Winterwonderland.....

  11. New "breed" for me! WOW! Sun dogs frolicking and rolling around, and sitting up. I prefer the warm Waikiki one to the cold sled-Sun dog. Mahalo for walkin' the dog. I think Tolkien was a tall menehune. DrumMajor

  12. I always love to see sun dogs. Not sure why. Maybe it is just kind of like an alien scene or something.

  19. This is the time of year that I see them around here but I only noticed them for the first time about five years ago. It never occurred to me that they'd also be in your warm climate. They're cool, eh? Lovely shots.
