Coach Shoji

A  L  O  H  A !
 “ Some people say
I have attitude-
maybe I do…
but I think you have to.
You have to believe in yourself
when no one else does
 – that makes you
a winner right there.”

 Venus Williams

“ Girls playing sports

 is not about winning

 gold medals.

 It’s about self-esteem,

learning to compete

and learning how hard

you have to work

 in order to achieve

 your goals. ”

Jackie Joyner-Kersee,
Three-time Olympic gold medalist

In 1981,

 Dave Shoji became

the first full-time coach

 of the University of Hawaii's

 women's volleyball program:

 Our beloved Rainbow Wahine.

What an amazing ride it's been!

On friday night Coach Shoji

 achieved

his 1,107th career win

 - an all time

NCAA Division 1 record!

And Dave's not done yet.

So congrats to a person

that causes all Hawaii to smile.

Thanks to all the memorable players

 for all the thrills

and championships over the years.

GO BOWS!

  5. women certainly face social barriers when it comes to sports. You won't find many schools that even female football players even if they're stronger than half the team put together.

  10. I do think that sports, particularly team sports, can teach some important things to kids. The coach makes a huge difference in that, in the teaching of good stuff instead of bad.

  11. Without Title 9 and great coaches women's sports would not have progressed to the point they are today.

  16. I saw this on the news. I'm not a big sports fan, but he really looks like a modest, effective coach. We're lucky to have him. Have a great Sunday, Cloudia.

  17. Go the Rainbows - literal and metaphorical.
Here in my city we have an elderly woman who for the last decade (at least) has been making HUGE pots of home-made soup and driving around to ensure that the needy have access to a hot and healthy meal. With some love added - to the pot and the delivery. She is most definitely one of my heroes.
