Bad Boy Fences

A  L  O  H  A !
Walking Honolulu's Chinatown,
 Along Centuries-Old Sidewalks

In the mid- to late-19th century,
sailing vessels came to Honolulu
[many from China]
to purchase sandalwood,
among other commodities.

 They arrived here,
holds full of
granite blocks as ballast
which was left behind.

The idea arose to use them for
sidewalks that can still be seen
throughout Chinatown.
This is King Street.

  2. Great fence pictures. Those are serious fences. I liked also the story of the granite blocks formerly serving as ballast now used as street pavements. Honolulu must be a daily interesting place to live.

  8. Love the fences. Are those folks good neighbors? What are in all those bales behind that one fence? Did your telephoto xray lens uncover secrets?
