A Secret Obsession

A  L  O  H  A !
                                 [WARNING: Material of Aviation Nature]

" The natural function of the wing
 is to soar upwards
and carry that which is heavy
up to the place where
dwells the race of gods.
More than any other thing
that pertains to the body
it partakes of the
 nature of the divine."
                                   Plato

" There is no sport equal
to that which aviators enjoy
while being carried through the air
on great white wings. "
Wilbur Wright, 1905

"No one can realize
how substantial the air is,
until he feels its
supporting power
beneath him.
It inspires
confidence at once. "
                           Otto Lilienthal

" We returned home,
after these experiments,
with the conviction that
sailing flight was not
the exclusive prerogative
of birds. "
                   Otto Lilienthal, 1874

" Can the magic
of flight
ever be carried
by words?
I think not.
                       Michael Parfit,
                              Smithsonian magazine,
                           May 2000

Walking in Waikiki
I spotted a
Japanese woman,
a visitor
(we can tell)
 blonde Mohawk
sprouting from
her shaved head.

She wore.
denim shorts,
and a studded
leather collar.
In contrast
to the beach-clad
throng.

If she had been "young"
I would have smiled
and reminisced,
but she looked
at least forty,
So I wanted
to talk to her.

Suddenly, a fighter jet
thundered low overhead.

She turned to watch it
(I was behind)
and said "Cool!"

"Yeah it is"
I agreed.

We shared a smile,
so we had our
moment after all;

Two overgrown
adolescents
in love
with cool stuff
that goes
F A S T !

We now return you
to our normal
sedate
fare.

Thank You!

  1. They are a marvel to be sure, until they actually go to work.

  3. Oh for the wings of a dove, or a majestic eagle, or even a hang glider! I absolutely LOVE everything to do with flying, in a small plane or glider. How I would love to have a pilot's licence but, sadly, rather too late for this old man-bird. Love you Cloudia for posting.

  6. I know the feeling! I hope my b.f. will take me to an air show, preferably one with a precision flight team.

  8. Can the magic of flight be carried by words. I think the closest I've seen is Opus in Bloom County when he dreams of flying.

  9. Cool indeed, you soared together as if on the wings of a dove. Priceless moment.

  10. Definitely cool. Hope it wasn't after the Indian Mynah from you last post that perched on the Government Property fence ;)

  12. The secret is out now! I like to fly, too. And look up at passing planes and think where they might be going or might have been.

  13. I used to dream that I could fly - it was a wonderful thing!

  14. I would see someone like that, and the writer in me would say, "there's a character."

We only see military aircraft here on the odd occasion when there's a flyover for certain occasions, like the 11th of November.

  15. A blond mohawk? Now that would be interesting.
