Wednesday, at Washington Place,
the home of Hawaii's last Queen,
Queen Liliuokalani,
Our Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed a bill into law recognizing Native Hawaiians as the only "indigenous, aboriginal, maoli people of Hawaii."
This is considered the first step in a process for
Native Hawaiians to form their own government.
Native Hawaiians to form their own government.
Native Hawaiians are the only remaining indigenous group in the United States who haven't been allowed to establish their own government.
This is ironic, as Hawaii was an internationally recognized nation under Native Hawaiian Monarchs throughout the 19th Century.
Next comes a five-member commission responsible for creating a roll of qualified Native Hawaiians who wish to participate in the new entity.
Not all Hawaiians are in favor of this:
"This is an affront to those of us
whose nation was stolen."
Pilipo Souza
Protesters outside of the signing ceremony
issued a statement saying in part:
" This bill continues to violate the sovereignty of the Hawaiian Kingdom, a constitutional, independent nation. . . this is not the proper remedy for the theft of a nation. . . a diabolical plan to help the United States to avoid lawful return to Hawaii of the Hawaiian Kingdom. "
Some continue the pursuit of remedies
at the UN and international courts.

Nevertheless,
this seems to be a minority opinion
even among Native Hawaiians.
Former Hawaii Governor John D. Waihee III
(Himself a Native Hawaiian)
who was
present at the signing said:
" I feel very good about it obviously. The main reason is
that it lays a foundation for the Native Hawaiian
community to take another step forward. "

Ciao
just a Fish, Erika! So glad to see you, thanks-
ReplyDeleteI love love Hawaii and just wish I had visited Washington Place when I was there. Hope it all has good results with the bill.
ReplyDeleteI don't really understand: a separate government for Native Hawaiians? How would that work?
ReplyDeleteAs a Native American, let me just say good luck with that!
ReplyDeleteThat's a cool picture of RLS with her. Seen a lot of pictures of him, but not this one.
ReplyDeleteReally interesting post Cloudia, we have a similar thing here with the Aboriginals, it's a very sad and complicated story and I feel that they have lost out on many things that should ne their right.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteI am always on your side and ready to help! Blessing my friend!
ReplyDeleteAloha Sis!
John
I just got here from Ron's because you said your post wasn't being updated. It's true.
ReplyDeleteI guess I don't have all the facts, so I don't know what exactly is going on.
America was taken away from the Native Americans. It's a horrible history, but we can't give the U.S. back to them now. It would be justice in theory, but not practical. What do native Hawaiians want? Who would Hawaii be given back to? There's sadly not a whole lot of pure blooded Hawaiians left are there? I need to learn more on this issue.
go Hawaiians!
