It had been a fun Saturday.
Sunset
heralded a relaxing evening at home.
The moon was almost full.
Honolulu was buzzing
with Halloween Hi-Jinks.
Then it all went sideways:
!TSUNAMI WARNING!
Living on our boat
for 20 years,
we had run from two
tsunami alerts!
But this time
we could watch it all
from the 35th floor
of our apartment building-
- MUCH nicer experience!
I wish I could describe
the sounds of multiple sirens
at varying distances,
the traffic,
the media hub-bub,
the government proclamations,
traffic jams,
traffic accidents. . .
The confusion
and expectation.
I wish I could show you
the lighted boats:
from commercial shipping,
to small private craft,
to the Coast Guard-
that all left the harbor
to bob on the dark horizon
like a flotilla
of stars.
I especially loved
the row of tug boats
that went out like
a family of
bright ducks.
Soon the streets
were silent.
Hawaii Waited.
We had seen significant
D A M A G E
from the Japanese Tsunami
of March 2011.
We were lucky
this time.
This morning,
all the ships returned.
Relaxing Waikiki Again

is any time
that one is still
so lucky
as to have. "

such a dangerous place,
a man is lucky
to get out of it
alive. "

Thanks for visiting!
Warmly, cloudia
So glad the tsunami warning was just a warning.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I'm hoping for less than anticipated from Sandy as well.
W.C.Fields sums it up very well, I think!
ReplyDeleteExcellent dramatic post. Conveys the sense of danger and chaos very well, I think.
So, so good to hear you all got out of it, not just alive, but unscathed!
glad you got lucky this time....kinda scary when those alarms start going off...love your pics of the city...particularly the night ones...
ReplyDeleteThat's the difference between there and her...they warn you when trouble is coming...here we ran out of money after running the warning sirens 24/7 for three decades.
ReplyDeleteGlad everyone got lucky this time!
ReplyDeleteSo glad it's all over in your space Cloudia and all is well with you. It must have been amazing to observe from up in your safe spot.
ReplyDeleteLove the picture where it all goes sideways!! Glad you're doing well.
ReplyDeletei'm glad this one was not bad! i read about it from the west coast side from someone up in canada and he mentioned hawaii, too. scary...
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you and the people of Hawaii are safe and sound this morning. We're all waiting for Hurricane Sandy over here. Thank you for your kind thoughts.

ReplyDeleteGreetings from Holland, Joop
I'm so glad you were lucky, it must be absolutely terrifying. :(
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts are def with the East Coast. May they all be safe. Glad there was no tsunami. Your pictures are great.
ReplyDeleteWhew! Glad you're okay. Kitty must be tired from standing guard all night. Boats bobbing on the ocean must've seemed like a hasty version of the lantern ceremony. The spirits up in the fields are glad the masses went back to the beach party! DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the tsunami warning was nothing more. Your photos through the day are just gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI just love the way you explained it, and the picture you chose to increase the tension in your way of telling it... Excellent.

Yes, the world feels to be on the brink of change.
ReplyDeletePlease have you all a good Tuesday.
Oh, great stuff here. Your tsunami photo is amazing--like a 30s movie poster and an image of the feeling of dread!
ReplyDeleteHi there - interesting post. It must be a really strange thing to see the sea behave like this. Warming systems are rather important I think!
