A L O H A !
Riding a passenger train,
past a siding
where boxcars,
tankers,
coal carriers,
flats,
and maybe even
a caboose,
waited,
was fascinating
to me as a child.
That is the Logo
of the
[ That's a Link!]
Trains were dirty, and loud,
and rattling.
But you could ride
and sleep
with comfort on
the C&O
Chessie was based on this painting.
I haven't been on a train
for a long time;
a long distance one,
with a compartment
for many years longer.
I remember the moments,
decades ago
early in the morning
[ traveling from Durango
to Philadelphia
via Chicago ]
rounding the
[ another link! ]
watching it from my
rocking bunk.
I can still see pink
waves of
the Atlantic
lapping near the
rails
of the line from
New York to
Boston-
again,
early in the
morning.
[The "Night Owl"
left after midnight.]
Some things
just stay
with you-
LOOK!

would you believe Isadora was called Chessie in the shelter
ReplyDeleteapparently one of the women there knew of the painting and the RR
she just didn't seem like a Chessie so once I saw she loved to wrap around my shoulders and that she walked like a dancer she became Isadora
for Duncan of course :)

ReplyDeleteSince I'm a dog person, I was trying to figure out the graphic, too. Rode the sleeper car from Okla. City to Chicago in '71, before some routes closed. Don't remember the quietness; do remember the glass of milk shaking and rocking on the table.

I went on the Durango to Silverton line a couple of years ago - fantastic experience.
