*Jeremy Bentham was a philosopher, economist, legal reformer, and the founder of modern utilitarianism, an ethical theory holding that actions are morally right if they tend to promote happiness or pleasure (and morally wrong if they tend to promote unhappiness or pain) among all those affected by them. So if killing one person would make many people happy, then the killing would be moral. Or would it? I remember discussing this in Philosophy in school.....

I am fascinated by the kalidescopic image at the beginning of the post. Your philosophic info about what is morality is very interesting. Our country definitely has some moral issues!

You have gotten really philosophical today. Pixie is pondering deeply. In that moment of decision, do we take the life of that pesky mosquito and possibly prevent a West Nile or Dengue Fever epidemic? Or do we let it live and treasure it because it is a living, sentient being that loves to suck our blood and spread disease... The best option: choose the gummies of light!
I'm all for creating happiness.
But... killing a person for the happiness of many still wouldn't make it right.
I agree with Mae. Right now our country appears to have morality issues.

I would consider the premise of happiness as the highest value of a philosophy on as kind of shaky. So I'll go with a contented Pixie. And beauty of flowers and rainbows.
