Hope YOU are not bored yet with Rainbows

Perhaps something grittier?
That's what I love about Honolulu:
it is a real city
set on a lovely island!

" The city is not a concrete jungle,
it is a human zoo.  "

Desmond Morris

Your daily necessities most likely reached you in a truck/lorry;
Here on the Hawaiian Isles, ours travel by sea.

World Meets Hawaii

A L O H A Warms World Press
Notice how many say that Hawaii reminds them of home!

Hu Jintao in Waikiki 歡迎胡錦濤

Nihau      歡迎胡錦濤       ALOHA!

Mornings in Waikiki
are usually peaceful.

But my walk to the post office
yesterday morning
was very different.

Hillary Clinton, US Secretary of State,
was speaking at my alma mater
University of Hawaii;
Treasury Secretary Geithner
was holding a meeting nearby.
But this was
BIGGER!

The BIG show
was heading right for Waikiki.
Vacationers/holiday makers
looked on with interest.

Honolulu Police Officers
in their APEC Aloha finery
were there:
President of the People's Republic of China
HU JINTAO
was on his way!

Local Chinese-Americans
were present for the big day

The pride of this young couple
was evident!

Motorcades are always a quick let-down.
The cheers of the crowd were exciting.

Now:
How To Get To the Post Office!

 True!

Below
is a slide-show
of events.

Thanks for visiting.
YOU
are a dignitary
here!

Comment for the record?

That breeze you felt
was Asteroid 2005 YU55 rushing past us
last night
at 6:28 p.m. EST Tuesday, Nov. 8.
That's 1:28 in my Tuesday afternoon,
Hawaiian Standard Time.

The 1,300-foot wide space object,
(Bigger than a massive aircraft carrier)
traveling at about 29,000 mph  (8 miles a second!)
"just missed" our Earth
in the closest such interplanetary encounter
  in more than three decades.

It just happens to be (reportedly)
the largest object on record
to pass this close to us
with our foreknowledge.

Italics mine and a little scared!

This visitor traveled light years to reach us,
coming as near as 201,700 miles to our Earth.
  She was even closer
than the moon at one point!

The moon felt a bit insecure for a moment.

So what keeps this thing moving, inertia?

Nope, it's YORP:

" The … reflection and ... re-emission of sunlight from an asteroid's surface acting as a propulsion engine, "
according to Finnish researcher
Mikko Kaasalainen of the University of Helsinki.

The 'Yarkovsky-O'Keefe- Radzievskii-Paddack effect'
works like this:

 1) The asteroid turns
2) sunlight slightly warms each side,
3) which causes it to spin away
and lose this heat to the chill of space.

Believe it or not,
that tiny spin really accumulates
over the course of trillions of miles or so!

“It’s a small effect on human time scales.
It’s an enormous effect on geological time scales.”
Jean-Luc Margot, a professor of astronomy at Cornell
told the New York Times.

The "feel good" part of the story:
This thing has flown by the Earth
many times before,
but this is the first time we even noticed it!
Wait;
Does that make me feel  more or less
apprehensive?

So, as the children say:
"Nyah Nyah Nyah,
(with tongue out)
You MISSED ME!"

Glad YOU didn't miss today's vist,

Greenwich Mean Time GMT

ALOHA IRL
(In Real Time)

Good Morning - Good Afternoon
- Good Evening -
or Happy Tomorrow

Time? A trick Question!

"Traveling is almost
 like talking with men
of other centuries."

René Descartes

" Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in. "

Henry David Thoreau

" Time is money. "
Benjamin Franklin

"Travel penetrates your consciousness,
but not in a rational way."

Milton Glaser

In 1714
England's Parliament offered a large cash prize
for the solution to the problem of longitude.

Once at sea
all sailors, except the Polynesians,
(click HERE for more on them)
were essentially lost.

John Harrison
created a marine clock
perfect enough to keep accurate time
on high seas in the age of sail.
Something not yet available
on land at the time!

The Royal Observatory at Greenwich
was designated
ZERO.

Hence, every place on Earth
could be designated
Greenwich Mean Time
(GMT) plus or minus.
Calculations then yielded
longitudinal position
anywhere in the world.

When my friends in Great Britain
are going online at 9am Tuesday
it is still 11pm Monday
here in my Hawaii.

(HST = Hawaiian Standard Time
HST is constant throughout the year.

When I get down to business at 9am
it is already 2pm in New York.
3pm in Summer!
(Daylight Saving Time = DST)

U.S. Navy Hamilton W.W. II era
Circa 1942
Has been called: "The clock that won the war."

" The present is a point just passed.  "
David Russell

 Are YOU West of Greenwich
like me?

Or Are YOU East of Greenwich?

What once was a sign of
cultural achievement
and an age of empire
  is today an agreed-upon
standard
  of convenience to ALL.

We understand
that the same
sky belongs
to all of us.
" A vision of truth
which does not call upon us
to get out of our armchair -
why, this is the desideratum of mankind!  "

John Jay Chapman

Why such is the
blogosphere (!)

that current, but timeless
world
that we here
create
and inhabit.
incidentally:

On November 18, 1883 the US established local standard time zones.
Before that, time could vary from town to town,
which didn't matter so much until railroads
brought the future to rural America

Thank YOU for journeying here.

may waste every day.

Here it is:

in the end.

So choose a lighter feeling
