Stillness And Departure

Always wear a smile. The gift of life will then be yours to give. Rabbi Nachman of Breslov

I must have been listening
to Morning Wild Bird Song
on my phone. Because
when I got in the car
it began in there. It was
amusing and unexpected,
but quickly became quite lovely.
I drove all the way
listening to the birds instead of music!
Later, I returned home with the birds.
My car had became a
Summer morning full of peace.
Traffic did not annoy me.

Today I was on Day 2
with the wild morning birds.

I think my blood pressure
has gone down!

Cats teach stillness;
birds are all departure.
Cat listens to the bird
the bird listens to the sky.

One lives by patience,
the other by flight.
Between them: the whole
lesson of desire.

Birds carry
the sky’s old language.
The cat listens to silence
the way hunger
 imbibes food's smell.

The bird knows what
the wind remembers.
They seem to vanish
so they can return
as signs.

The cat teaches stillness
as a form of knowing.
The bird teaches flight
and all about
finding out.

Bird is a bright thought
Heaven could not keep.
Kitty contemplates
then promptly falls asleep!

There is a calm thread running through this that feels very intentional, especially the way the quotes, the bird song, and the driving experience all settle into the same rhythm of attention rather than noise. Turning a car ride into something closer to listening than rushing changes the whole texture of the day, and it comes through clearly in your reflection on traffic not feeling intrusive anymore. The contrast between stillness and departure in the closing piece is especially strong, where cats and birds become more than imagery and start to feel like two different ways of being in the world.

Oh, how I adored your poem, Cloudia! It's a perfect description of cats and birds. And what a great photo of Pixie, too. Blessings!

Thanks for mentioning the birdsong. It caused me to stop for just a bit and notice the calling just outside my window. It’s too easy to shove it way the background.

I've had a nearby nest of robins to listen to for the last month...or maybe two. Loved your poem. Who is the white/grey cat sharing Pixie's space today?

Our local robin serenades us all day, Cloudia. ;-)

I'm so amazing at the rainbows that show up in Hawaii. We only get them once in a while here. Have a nice day.

Unfortunately, the only birdsongs I heard this morning at 2:00 and 4:00 were the many, many roosters in our area.
Have a wonderful, peaceful weekend, Cloudia.
