He Touched Me

A  L  O  H  A !
Danny Boy by James Galway & The Chieftains on Grooveshark

we are the most alive

Going into a crowd
is not my habit.

But Sir James Galway
played in Honolulu on Sunday
so with my tall friend John
at my side, I braved
the Blaisdel Concert Hall.

Have I mentioned
that I have played flutes
of every sort
my whole life?
(when medically possible)

How could I pass this up?

His tone was instructive,
not a particle of air,
nor the tiniest vibration
out of place.

Woody.

He made that gold flute
sound like wood.

He also played
a penny whistle!

"I'm one of those amateurs,"
I said to himself afterwards,
"and I will be hearing your tone
in my head for quite some time.
If you wouldn't mind-
would you touch my hand
with yours?"

He placed his atop mine,
I put my other atop his.
I think he closed his eyes.

An Angel Passed.

And so the
Laying of of Hands
to inform my playing;
If not technically
then in my
confidence.

Who would YOU
like to meet?

Today is a crisp day here in Honolulu!
"The best weather on the planet"
a local meteorologist calls it.
When the Trade Winds blow,
and the Sun shines,
the Palms Wave,
 Waves roll in,
& People Smile.

The Ko`olau Mountains
are sharp enough
to cut your tongue.

Such are my wishes for you:
All the pleasures
of a perfect day!

Hawaii Calling

A   L   O   H   A  !
This curb in Downtown Honolulu on King St was cut from
the reefs offshore. You can see tiny holes in it.
(Click to Enlarge) It may well date back
to Territorial Days, or even further.

" I had to dance topless
for two years to make cash . . .

about with us. "

When Hawaii became the 50th US State
I was in elementary school
 (just barely).
Hawaii called out to me.

Everything about her
enchanted me. I learned
 a few words of Hawaiian
from the National Geographic.

The islands were a long LONG away
from the snows of Philadelphia.

Sometimes I went with my Dad
driving around the City while he
conducted his business.
Arthur Godfrey's radio show
 was often on the radio,
(he was HUGE then)
with his ukulele's and trademark:
"How Ah Ya, How Ah Ya, How Ah Ya"
Which I heard as "How are You"
and also "Hawaii.."
I think that's what he meant
cause he broadcast from
 Honolulu sometimes.

There was one song I heard on his show
that is forever associated in my soul
with sunny leafy
 Philadelphia childhood
days in the old Ford
with my young father.

I had forgotten about that song
but it was not lost forever.
When I moved to Hawaii
I heard the song again!

It is called Kalamaula. Have a Listen-

Hawaii's Real Secret

A  L  O  H  A !
Kaulana Na Pua by Makaha Sons of Niʻihau on Grooveshark
Much has been made, and rightfully so,
about the majesty, the beauty of Hawaii.
The song above (Do click on it)
is an old patriotic song of this land.
It sings of the real treasures of Hawaii:
Na Pua
which in Hawaiian language means
The (plural) Flowers.
But it is not a song about flowers-

No, not these Pua.
The Hawaiians of old
loved to allude to things,
they loved riddles and
figures of speech.
Everyone knew
Na Pua of Hawaii
ARE HER PEOPLE!

A Hawaiian Sense of Face

Yesterday . . .

F O R E V E R !

TUTU means "Grandmother"
President Obama called his grandma:
"Toot." Anyone in Hawaii would "get" it.

The man on the right is my
State Senator Brickwood M. Galuteria.
His is an ethnically Hawaiian face,
like Tutu above.
The man on the left is a local business leader,
His is a face OF Hawaii.

Only Native Hawaiians are HAWAIIAN.
I am a Hawaii resident, grateful to the
host culture that has welcomed
and nurtured me for so many years.

Rep. Chris Lee & Constituents

The Hawaiian Monarchy
was multicultural
before that was
a word.
I might have been a
Hawaiian Subject,
though not a
Native Hawaiian.

My friends, the Mahu Wahine. (Link)
 Respect is returning to them.
AMEN to THAT!

“In Hawaii,

we are all minorities,

and we all deserve

 the same Aloha,”

State Rep. Chris Lee

Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams

- And dream your troubles away
Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams by Frank Sinatra on Grooveshark
A L O H A !
" If you look around,
you can find a face of God
 in each thing, because
He is not hidden
in a church, in a mosque,
 or a synagogue,
but everywhere. . .
Who finds Him,
stays forever with him. "

 Shams Tabrizi

In 1841,
life expectancy at birth
was 40 years for males
and 42 years for females.

By 1900 it was
52 and 57.

Today it is 79 and 83.

So many things change with time.
