Red Crested Party Cardinal

A  L  O  H  A !

I used to think:
" Somewhere there is
a party."

All the witty people
are there,
Somewhere high
above the streets
above you and me.

Only Special People
are invited.

How badly I wanted
to be one of them!

I felt imprisoned
in the
Every Day.

Burning Yearning
filled me with
desire.

But I have learned:
The Party is Everywhere!
All Around Us!
We are all invited!
Though not all attend.

Notice the colors,
Taste all the treats.

So many special people
to meet!

The party is right
HERE.
.

Don't miss it!

Thanks, Friends!

Honolulu's Historic GLBT Culture

A L O H A !

The Glades Project (Re-Enactment filming Behind the Scenes) from Connie M. Florez on Vimeo.

Many years ago. . .
On Honolulu's famous Hotel Street
their was a place where
the boys were prettier than the girls.
That place was The Glades.

Drag performers all wore a button
by Honolulu law
that read: "I am a boy."

Black Men in America
were carrying signs that said:
"I Am A Man."

Those were some times!

Today, my friend Connie
is making a film. . .
about a time. . .
about special people. . .

“Like Batman,
all of us hide behind our masks
and use them to help define ourselves for others.
We all have secret identities of a sort,
hidden behind our smiling social-networking profiles
or our happy church faces. They're not lies, really.
They're just not the whole truth,
because we know that most of the people
we encounter day-to-day couldn't handle the truth
(or perhaps we couldn't handle giving it to them)."
Paul Asay, God on the Streets of Gotham:
What the Big Screen Batman Can Teach Us about God and Ourselves

Wow! Really?
All THAT from Batman, Professor?

Happy Wise

" Every word, facial expression,
gesture, or action
on the part of a parent
gives the child some message
about self-worth.
It is sad that so many
parents don't realize
what messages they are sending. "

MY MURAL

A L O H A !
Tawanka Learning Center [formerly Elementary School]
Link

When I was a kid in school,
this NEWER school came along.
We would be the first kids to attend it!

In the months it was being built,
we created the mural you see above
in the cafetorium of our "old" school.
We glued tiles to a giant paper drawing.

The mural we created is still there.
The kids we were
are harder to see.
