Hawaii Charlot Mural

A L O H A From Honolulu!

Life throws challenges
and every challenge comes
with rainbows and lights
to conquer it.
Amit Ray

Jean Charlot, Link
the significant French-born
American artist,
came to Hawaii in 1949 to
create frescoes
for the University of Hawaii.
He had already worked with
Diego Rivera and
Frida Kahlo in the
Mexican Muralism Renaissance
of the early 1920s

In 1951 First Hawaiian Bank
[then Bishop National Bank]
commissioned Charlot to create this
large mural of several panels for
its new Waikiki Branch at the corner
of Kalakaua Avenue and Lewers Street.
[A few blocks from my home.
We have been First Hawaiian Bank
customers for 30 years]

Titled
“Early Cultural Exchanges
Between Hawaii and the Outer World"
this work is set between
1780 and 1830
depicting the immense changes
and multitude of introductions
to Hawaii during those years.
Charlot and his wife
made Hawaii their home,
and the artist
deeply studied Hawaiian
language,
history and culture.

Above we see a Chief trading
a fine feathered cape for
western goods like metal nails,
textiles, and tools.

This panel depicts the sitting
for a famous painting of
Kamehameha the Great in
red waistcoat accompanied
by wife Ka'ahumanu. Charlot
appreciated the role of
Hawaii's women and often
depicted them in his work.

We see a Hawaiian guard
with spear, and
a Chinese person gifting
Hawaii it's first Banyan Tree.
The tiny plant promises the giant treasures we enjoy throughout
the islands today!

A foreign dignitary or
sea captain offers his
complements to the
King and Queen.

" 'He wanted to make clear. . .
that the Hawaiians had
their own powerful culture
and were dynamically involved
in the historic drama unfolding
around them —
not passive primitives.
That is something that must
be underscored,' said his son
and biographer,
John Charlot." Link

I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.

'We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,'
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.

There

A L O H A From Honolulu!

Papaya Tree Radiance

There will be times when
you will be in the field
without a camera. And,
you will see the most
glorious sunset or the
most beautiful scene that
you have ever witnessed.
Don't be bitter because
you can't record it.
Sit down, drink it in,
and enjoy it
for what it is.

Short Ride Through Another World

A L O H A From Honolulu!
Upon a winding river,
slow down and
the river
becomes straight.

I came Here before
the sun came up
I mean here,
waiting for the bus
Don't wanna be late,
as you can plainly see

Take note of the

wonky back wheel -

I snapped this shot as the
giant suitcase drove by.

The dialogue of horizontals
is a nice accident.
But what to do with the
prominent pole
in the foreground?!

Well, the van shot above this was made
from this one by Magic Eraser
on my Google Pixel 6 Pro phone.
I am also enjoying the lens options
and wonderfully clear shots on
my best camera EVER.

Oh yes. It surfs the web
and even functions
as a Telephone!

I’m as lucky as can be.

Shone

A L O H A From Honolulu!

Every evening,
as soon as the Sun
had finished his course,
Diana mounted her moon car,
and drove her milk-white
steeds across the heavens,

- watched over and loved
by the countless stars,
which shone their brightest
to cheer her on her way;
and as she drove she
often bent down to
view the sleeping earth,
so shadowy and dreamlike,

- and to breathe
the intoxicating perfume
of the distant flowers...

- It always seemed to her then
as if Nature, so beautiful
during the day, borrowed
additional charms from the
witching hours of the night. Unknown

Oahu Winter

A L O H A From Honolulu!

Return of Good Weather!
Oahu Weather is
the BEST!
Winter is a tad
cooler & wetter.

Surf reaches
world-class levels.

Storms can come
in from sea
with amazing
amounts of
rain & wind!

Hawaii Island (Big Island)
has glorious tall
volcanic mountains
that see snow in the winter.
Even blizzards!*

Yes, we have winter
in the Islands.
Then the next day, or week:
glorious Summer returns.
We enjoy a hundred Springs
on Oahu!

Where even the rain is a
blessing and embrace.

you're finished.

price of change.
