That sulphurous atmosphere is called
V O G: Volcanic Smog.

Fortunately, Honolulu
usually enjoys a
North Pacific High
parked north of us,
driving Trade Winds,
the islands'
natural air conditioning.
But since last Saturday,
Southerly winds have
crashed our weather party,
bringing haze from
Kīlauea volcano
on the Big Island,
[ 4,190 feet (1,277 m) high ]
Erupting since
January 3, 1983
!
Kīlauea means "spewing"
or "much spreading"
in the Hawaiian
language,
referring to its
prodigious production
of lava,
or in this case
HAZE.
or in this case
HAZE.
"Kona Weather"
Blue skies and
fresh air
have returned!
Now THAT is delight.

why shouldn't people feel
as free to delight - ? "
why shouldn't people feel
as free to delight - ? "

Yes, why don't we all sing in the streets after a spell of awful weather?
i am delighted at the golden sun on the cow fields and the trees just starting to change....its singing to me..
aloha from va
Good morning Cloudia- why am I remembering that song- Purple Haze! Must be all that singing. Which the birds are doing again outside right now. I think they are mad about summer being pushed away-Keep singing- Karen
That vog makes some lovely shots! So glad to hear fresh air has now returned.
now that's something i wouldn't have considered there. cool, but not! :)
its one day til week end .. that's making me very happy aloha!
Volcanic fog. Now there's a great title for a story. Glad it has cleared up.
Oh! Smog from a volcano? At least that's not man made. Here in Malaysia, we are getting the haze from plantation-burning in Indonesia : (
Love the pictures. It was great to learn about vog.
I am delighted by so many things. A phone call from grandson is at the top of the list today.
I like the weather report. I'm planning to visit Hawaii at the end of the month. You can take credit for much of my decision. Your enticing photos have lured me.
Interesting post, I am glad that blue sky and sunshine has returned. Have a beautiful day.
Greetings,
Heidi
Hope your trade winds continue to cool and keep the air clean. We keep forgetting about the on-going volcano.
Reminds me of the dust storms we get here in summer when the hot northerly wind strips the top soil from farm land then dumps the lot on our city.
I had never heard of VOG before. Nasty, nasty, nasty. And yes, today I am rejoicing because we got some much needed rain yesterday. It is windy and chilly today but the plants will be thriving after that rain.
Lovely post, gorgeous photos. Thankk you..
You always post the best photos :-)
Thanks for visiting with us today!
It's amazing how the vog affects the light. The colors are really something.
Oh yuck! I'm so sorry, Cloudia! This is awful!
Nothing to beat fresh air and lovely pictures:)
Thanks!
Visiting here is always a delight!

Aloha!
I heard the VOG on Big Island can also spread sulfur fumes, so I've steered clear of Big Island on visits. I like greenery and waterfalls more than barren rock. (Doesn't VOG smell like a livestock truck ahead of your car on a single-lane Kansas highway?

Yes, interesting photo subject.
Great captures.

Another weekend about to begin.
All your photos are beautiful. Is there anything you cannot do?? You're an author, a photographer, a poet, an observer of people, a psychologist, but above all a good friend. Thank you.
Greetings/groeten from the Netherlands. I hope the vog won't effect you.
Visiting here!

Thanks SO much
