Volcano Grandmother Pele

A   L   O   H   A  !

 Pele, volcano goddess

created these islands

with her magical hula

of fire!

Sometimes,

folks see her as 

a young Hawaiian girl,

sometimes

as a seasoned older 

woman in red. . .

 "According to Hawaiian Legend,

 Pele, the fiery goddess 

of the volcanoes in Hawaii, 

would send her white dog

 as a messenger to alert the people 

when an eruption was imminent. 

A white dog was first noticed 

by the observatory staff 

during the latter part of 1959

 about 1/2 km below the observatory."

That sulphurous atmosphere is called

  V O G: Volcanic Smog.

Fortunately, Honolulu 

usually enjoys a 

North Pacific High

parked north of us,

driving Trade Winds,

the islands'

 natural air conditioning.

But since last Saturday,

Southerly winds have 

crashed our weather party,

bringing haze from 

Kīlauea volcano

 on the Big Island,

[  4,190 feet (1,277 m) high ]

Erupting since

 January 3, 1983

!

Kīlauea means "spewing" 

or "much spreading"

 in the Hawaiian language, 

referring to its

 prodigious production

  of lava,
or in this case
HAZE.

she flows

right beneath

our feet.
