One day a few years ago, I was riding my motorcycle along the Leeward coast, far outside of Honolulu. this is where the mountans draw close to the shore, where ancestral valleys chant ancient songs, and a place where many Hawaiians live; a place where Hawaii lives. I saw an old woman walking down the road with her dog. I imagined that she lived a simple life without much money- like Aunty in my novel- but I knew that hers was a rich life, a full life amidst struggle and beauty. That day I knew to stop worrying so much. Life really is simple if we allow it to be. Subsistance is truly abundance. Today I share the hula with you. It speaks of my first Hawaii home in Kona. Though my Hawaiian is very weak, when the men dance I can see and smell places of my past. Places dear. I want to share my treasures with you! Aloha
I loved this, Cloudia. It's even better than the women's hula in some ways because it's less well known out of the islands, I think. Plus, those guys are hot when they dance!! Thanks for the pick-me-up in a long, tiring day.
Great post! Thoroughly enjoyed the video clip and then enjoyed your commenyts about ancestral valleys, ancient songs and an old woman who knew how to live richly! Beautiful!
Thank you for sharing your treasure, Cloudia. A treasure it is! This video speaks a million words. And so nice to see manly men being so graceful. Long live simplicity.
Beautiful hula guys. I want to be the old woman walking with the dog. You can adopt ME, and I mean it! The hula just pulls at the heart, and reminds me of wonderful, calm, and kind Hawaiians. I can smell the plumaria flowers from the trees in Lahaina and hear the ocean always rolling to the beach, even in the crisp cool air of darkness. Your posts lower blood pressure better than any pill. Aloha, DrumMajor
Wonderful singing and dancing. I loved seeing the men dance, have seen women's hula, but not men; it's equally beautiful! Thanks so much for this and you comment, too!
