Walking Honolulu's Chinatown,
Along Centuries-Old Sidewalks
" In the mid- to late-19th century,
sailing vessels came to Honolulu
[many from China]
to purchase sandalwood,
among other commodities.
They arrived here,
holds full of
granite blocks as ballast
which was left behind.
The idea arose to use them for
sidewalks that can still be seen
throughout Chinatown.
This is King Street.
