Any Patch of Sunlight

A L O H A From Honolulu!

She turned to the sunlight
And shook her yellow head,
And whispered to her neighbor:
"Winter is dead.”
A.A. Milne

Any patch of sunlight in
a wood will show you something
about the sun which you could
never get from reading books
on astronomy. These pure
and spontaneous pleasures
are ‘patches of Godlight’
in the woods of
our experience. C.S. Lewis

Ebisu,
in Japanese mythology, one of the
Shichi-fuku-jin
(“Seven Gods of Luck”),
the patron of fishermen
and tradesmen.
He is depicted as a fat,
bearded, smiling fisherman
often carrying a rod in
one hand and a tai
(sea bream—i.e., a red snapper
—symbolic of good luck)
in the other.
He is a popular Shintō deity,
and his
image is frequently seen in
shops and places of commerce.
