Collective Public Art Project
OR Vandalism?
The root meaning of the word art
is “to fit together” and we all
do this every day. Not all of us
are painters but we are all artists.
Each time we fit things together
we are creating – whether it is to
make a loaf of bread, a child, a day. Corita Kent

"The Citizen Royal"  KUHIO Day Parade
"- It honors a man who went from being the adopted son of a king to a counterrevolutionary to Hawaii’s voice in the U.S. Congress. Prince Kuhio was born March 26, 1871, the youngest of three sons of Kauai’s High Chief David Kahalepouli Piikoi and Princess Kinoiki Kekaulike. He grew to be a pragmatic politician called the “Citizen Prince” because of his devotion to the Hawaiian people. After the annexation, although they couldn’t vote for the president, citizens of the territory could elect a nonvoting delegate to Congress.  In 1902, Prince Kuhio, was elected delegate and served until his death Jan. 7, 1922. He was 50.
In Washington, D.C., where many considered Hawaiians to be simple natives, Prince Kuhio cajoled Congress into appropriating millions for the construction of Pearl Harbor. He was credited with creating Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The prince also created the Hawaiian Homes Commission to get his people back on the land. In 1920, the last of the alii (High Chief/Royal) to wield real political power introduced the first congressional resolution calling for Hawaii statehood. In 1949, the date of Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana’ole birth was declared a holiday. The Territorial Legislature wanted to honor the Citizen Prince, a man who never forgot his people.

Obscure Glory

The true beauty of music
is that it connects people.
It carries a message, and
we, the musicians,
are the messengers.
Roy Ayers

Street music is always good
even if it is bad because
there is only
one melody there:
The melody of the life
struggle of a poor man.

The Good Remains

A L O H A From Honolulu!

Don't let the crazy
dim your light.
That alone is
a radical act.
Pause, reflect, and
what is right will appear.

Sharing makes you
bigger than you are.
The more you pour out
the more life will be
able to pour in.

the pleasure passes away

I hope I never get tired of
the night sky, of thunderstorms,
of watching cream make
galaxies in my coffee.
I hope I never grow to be
someone who can no longer
see the small beautiful things.
