The Honolulu Phone Book is very interesting! All the unique local names, and the many ethnicities represented, never fail to draw me in whenever I pick it up. Now who or what was I searching for? Oh well, look at all these “Makekau’s” “Manabog’s” “Manuel’s” “Masuda’s” “Ming’s” “Mook’s” and “Moon’s!” . . .A L O H A! Cloudia

Delightful entries! Diamond Head seems greener in the shadow of a cloudy day.
Yep, Michelle's right...need to know about Hawaii to understand Barack. I'm still trying to help Kansas/Missouri co-workers realize the meaning and "results" of Barack's Hawaiian upbringing. I sense most mainlanders see Hawaii as a physical paradise, but don't realize that the spirit of the people is what makes it wonderful.
Wow -- just look at the cultural and ethnic heritage blending all around in the cool photo of the Aunties....the stories they could tell.
Aloha, DrumMajor

You have the gift to get us more acquainted with Hawaii each time we get here. Thanks for taking us on a tour on your island! Have a nice weekend.

That is such fun! I love the photos and the quotes. Phone books are definitely revealing. We have antique ones around here that reveal 20 or so names--names that have been around here for centuries and still run the town. (Things don't change too quickly here.)

Your Michelle Obama quote made me smile--yesterday in the New York Times was a story about how the President keeps the Oval Office at tropical temperatures!

Interesting quotes. Sounds like the world should be pleased that Obama grew up in Hawaii.

(I'm cold Cloudia, come get me! Bet I could wear my quitcherbitchin bracelet in Hawaii!)

Beatutiful pics, great history; but more specifically, the whole "tribe" mentality of people working together for the good of the whole. Hmmm? See a pattern here?

It's bizarre, but anytime I travel? I dig the phone book out of the pressed wood drawer in a hotel room and read the names!

When I moved to KS their was only ONE Smith in the phone book! The rest were german and I couldn't pronounce them!

Nice pictures, and a very interesting post. I looked through the phone books when I was stationed overseas, years ago. It's interesting to read the different names. I would imagine you can get a feel of your varied cultures through the list of names.
