Just as music does,
or a book we once loved,
movies take us
back in time
to the person we were
when we met them.

I just watched
'The Bird Man Of Alcatraz'
with Burt Lancaster.

Saw it in the theater.
Back then, when choosing,
a film, one might ask:
"Is it color, or black & white?"

This film is black and white.

The film is also 50 years old!

[ Cue up the
'flashback memory music' ]

We went to the movies
all the time when I was young.
Dad had been a projectionist
in WWII.
Other dads flew bombers,
mine showed movies.

Seeing a scene
that I saw,
when younger than 10,
the 'Me' of today
watched the 'Me'
I was back then.

What would I tell
that child,
now that I am
both at once,
all through the
 magic of film?

I remember the car
we had then,
the smell of the rain
riding home in the dark.

Dad was young & strong,
loved & feared,
but riding with him
felt safe
from the mysterious
big wild world
out there.

Watching movies
with dead people:

Dad and child-me.

How can 50 years
 take so long,
yet pass so fast?

Back then I yearned,
and wondered;

Today I have memories
and know.

Yearning is turning
seasons change,
as I look back
 with tears
that are sweeter
than laughter.

Know what I mean?

This came home to me with great force. My dad never drove, so it was not the situation, it must have been the sheer dadness that I felt.

And time just never seems to slow down either

Such a profound post. Thank you. The father I loved and feared did make me feel safe from the world if not from him.
And the Lewis Carrol quote hit the bell for me. Thank you.

Gone in the blink of an eye and now that we are teenagers let's go let trouble find us.

I think the Mark Twain quote is one the Republicans are embracing ..

twains quote is so true...our memories become brighter and more forgiving the further back we go...the world was so wild and big yet also a bit more tame back then....

Yes, I wonder that about the passing of time as well. It's such a strange thing.

Yes, I do, know exactly what you mean. Precious are every moment, passing ever so quickly by. Peace-Karen

I know exactly what you mean Cloudia, and yes it's funny how we sometimes alter memories to make us more 'comfortable' with them.

I love your words here. They took me back to movies I saw with my grandfather.

Memories can be wonderful.

Nice tribute, Cloudia. Glad there's some good memories for you. The abstract memories are better. Aloha, DrumMajor

One of the characters in Robert B Parker novel says "What if you could be young again and were able to undo the things that were done that made you the person you would eventually become. But then who would you be." My father was also "young & strong and loved & feared" but is now becoming an increasingly frail man of almost 88. I can still see the young man and hear his voice and his laughter. As G-Man said, time just never seems to slow down.

Hahahahaha! Twain! What a guy. That's my philosophy for sure. The truth or LIES whatever works.

For many a reason, very moving.

Please have you all a good Thursday.

I remember that Bird Man movie too. Art's dad was also a projectionist/manager at the Honokaa theater.

It's rather frightening how quickly time passes. Everytime I have to refill my weekly pill case, it shocks me.

I know exactly what you mean. That return to youth is a powerful experience... no matter the medium. Lovely post, Cloudia and that first image is a beauty.

Very nice to relive our emories. I laugh watching the western channel and remembering watching with my parents and family, all gone, I can almost hear my mother commenting and offering to us a first glance at empathy in many films.
