A L O H A !
It had been a fun Saturday.
Sunset
heralded a relaxing evening at home.
The moon was almost full.
Honolulu was buzzing
with Halloween Hi-Jinks.
Then it all went sideways:
!TSUNAMI WARNING!
Living on our boat
for 20 years,
we had run from two
tsunami alerts!
But this time
we could watch it all
from the 35th floor
of our apartment building-
- MUCH nicer experience!
I wish I could describe
the sounds of multiple sirens
at varying distances,
the traffic,
the media hub-bub,
the government proclamations,
traffic jams,
traffic accidents. . .
The confusion
and expectation.
I wish I could show you
the lighted boats:
from commercial shipping,
to small private craft,
to the Coast Guard-
that all left the harbor
to bob on the dark horizon
like a flotilla
of stars.
I especially loved
the row of tug boats
that went out like
a family of
bright ducks.
Soon the streets
were silent.
Hawaii Waited.
We had seen significant
D A M A G E
from the Japanese Tsunami
of March 2011.
We were lucky
this time.
This morning,
all the ships returned.
Relaxing Waikiki Again
" The right time
is any time
that one is still
so lucky
as to have. "
Henry James
" The world is getting to be
such a dangerous place,
a man is lucky
to get out of it
alive. "
W. C. Fields
