For decades

cutting edge astronomical

discoveries have been made

atop Maunakea,

the sacred mountain 

of the Hawaiian people.

As defenders of this sacred realm,

Hawaiians have decried 

construction, land use,

and water use, on

Maunakea for years.

Now a new instrument

is planned over their

objections.

But this time, the 

world is changing.

The Hawaiian people

are educated, knowledgeable

and strengthened by

their resurgent culture.

I love science! But this

is now about something

more important.

Right now,

what's happening on

this land, these islands,

our Earth,

is more important

than learning more

about space.

I believe the ancient 

Hawaiians who studied

the stars, and were 

great ocean navigators,

King Kalakaua who

invited astronomers

to his kingdom to

observe the transit

of Venus,

would all appreciate

and applaud the resurgence

of their descendants above all.

"In February 1843 British Lord George Paulet on HMS Carysfort seized and occupied the Kingdom of Hawaii.

On July 26 Admiral Richard Darton Thomas sailed into Honolulu harbor on his flagship HMS Dublin. He became Local Representative of the British Commission by out-ranking Paulet. His intention was to end the occupation." 

"On July 31, he held the Hawaiian flag in his hands as he officially transferred the islands back to King Kamehameha III who said the words Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ʻĀina i ka Pono in a speech during a ceremony to mark his restoration. Roughly translated from the Hawaiian language it means "The sovereignty of the land is perpetuated in righteousness" and has become the state motto of Hawaii, incorporated into the Seal of Hawaii." 

"The British flag set was pulled down and the Hawaiian flag was raised, followed by a series of 21 gun salutes from the Fort, the British ships Carysfort, Dublin, Hazzard, the American ship Constellation, and lastly by guns at the park."

"Kamehameha III later named the place where the ceremony was held in Downtown Honolulu "Thomas Square" in Admiral Thomas's honor and dedicated it as a public park."

"The origins of the Law of the Splintered Paddle are derived from before the unification of the Island of Hawaiʻi. In 1782 during a raid, Kamehameha caught his foot in a rock. Two local fishermen, fearful of the great warrior, hit Kamehameha hard on the head with a large paddle, which broke the paddle. Kamehameha was stunned and left for dead, allowing the fisherman and his companion to escape. Twelve years later, the same fishermen were brought before Kamehameha for punishment. The king instead blamed himself for attacking innocent people, gave the fishermen gifts of land and set them free. He declared the new law, "Let every elderly person, woman, and child lie by the roadside in safety." This influenced many subsequent humanitarian laws of war."
