Fifty Years On - SELMA

A  L  O  H  A !
“ Dignity is as
essential to human life
as water, food,
and oxygen. ”
                   Laura Hillenbrand

Hawaii People Were There

" The single most powerful
 word in our democracy is...
“we.” WE the people.
WE shall overcome.
Yes WE can.
It is owned by no one. "
                                 President Obama

" What enormous faith
these men and women had
- faith in God
but also faith in America. "
                         President Obama
                                           at Selma

/\
Yesterday we recalled
Bloody Sunday.

marchers for fair voting rights
were met by the violence
of police with guns, clubs,
and trained attack dogs,
while attempting to walk
across a bridge.

Yesterday, President Obama,
Congressman John Lewis
(one of the beaten marchers
as a young man of 25)
and many others
walked that bridge
again.

We still march vigilant
against today's encroachments
on equality before our law.

Nothing Earthly is perfect,
No person, No Nation.
That is why we strive.

The desire to climb,
to explore, to grow,
are the deepest core
of our shared humanity.

But so are fear,
un-examined bias,
and lazy thinking.

I love my country.
I love what she stands for.
We call her to her
higher nature.

Dignity is on the march
still today.
All around the world.

It is not humans
that we battle,
but attitudes, shallow thinking,
shallow love.

Hate,
even so-called
"Righteous Anger"
chases away
light & understanding.
It is not the solution.

Don't fight-
Shed light!

Thank You
for shouldering
this wheel too.

Together. Friends.
My Prayer.

Lots of Love,

" Loving yourself…
does not mean
being self-absorbed
or narcissistic,
or disregarding others.
Rather it means
welcoming yourself
as the most honored guest
in your own heart,
 a guest worthy
of respect, a
lovable companion."

Avoid the Obvious

A  L  O  H  A   from   Honolulu!
I have always been
fascinated by the past,
even before
I spent so much
of my life there.

the responsibility
of tomorrow
by evading it
today. "

People who are tall
have heard the jokes
before.

Why would You
want to be
the 439,95763,374,650th
'wit' to call her 'Shorty'
or inquire as to the
Weather 'up there'?

The guy with the broken arm
probably does NOT
want to tell you
the story again.

People who are different
from You,
different Race Gender Culture
Clothing Style Slogans
are MORE than
that difference!

They are NOT
walking examples
of something you
believe.

They are not
a characteristic.
They are a human.

Children stare.
Mature people
Welcome.

Grow Up!

Then come goof around
here in a delightfully
immature way :)

Moat Or Fence, Your Highness?

IOLANI  PALACE,
Seat of Hawaiian Royalty

In 1862 this magnificent
palace was built.

You can see the monarchy era
Troop Barracks
through this 19th Century gate.

A proper castle!
Look at those regal spikes!
King Kalakaua was
the first royal head of state
to make a journey around the world.
He was a favorite personality
 all over Europe, visiting
his brother royals.

Glance inside the book
"Around the World With a King"
Click on "Preview"
to see a smashing
frontispiece of the King.

Today the book is
chiefly noteworthy
for the blatant,
matter of fact racism
of the author's
 attitude towards
his Hawaiian King!

The Caucasian (Hawaiian)
officials who accompanied
the beloved King
[including author]
were HIS APPOINTEES
and SUBJECTS!

The chief job of
Hawaiian royals from
Kamehameha the Great
onward, was to remain
independent and not a
colony in a frankly colonial
age. This they accomplished
with great dignity
until island-born
American business men
[including the children of missionaries]
overthrew the monarchy
in a bloodless coup
because Queen Liliuokalani
wanted none of her people
shot. And she trusted in the
justice of the USA,
even lobbying Congress
in person!

She did fly the US
flag over her lovely
[private] home during
WWI.
You see, this was not
so very long ago.

We are all guests
of the Hawaiian People.

That should ALWAYS
be respected!
