How To Pronounce HONOLULU

A  L  O  H  A !
 Three Monstera Leaves
" The lesson which life
 repeats and constantly enforces

is 'look under foot.'

You are always

nearer the divine

and the true sources

of your power

 than you think. "

John Burroughs

 Kolea / Golden Plover

 "Never hold discussions
 with the monkey
when the organ grinder
 is in the room."

Sir Winston Churchill

" I like to listen.
I have learned a great deal
 from listening carefully.
Most people
 never listen."

Ernest Hemingway

 Hono, means “a bay,”

 Lulu, means “sheltered.”

Unfortunately, the name
of our town is usually
mispronounced:

"Hah - Nah - Loo - Loo"

It is properly:

"Ho - No - Loo - Loo"

Rhymes with:

"Oh No You You"

Now YOU Know!
                                  Fondly, cloudia

The Waikiki was beautiful. It was just a walk across from the Hilton the last time we were there. Wonder if there are changes since then. Been a long time! Thanks for the memories Cloudia!

Love the Waikiki poem, Cloudia, and the sight of that golden plover again. Ah, it's been too long since I've visited home! Happy 2014 to you and hope it's off to a great start!

Thanks for the lesson. Must be correct next trip so nobody will detect I'm a visitor, eh?
Still confused. If "hono" is bay, why is hono equal turtle? Multiple uses for same word? Turtles in bay? Must go swim.

The golden plover is beautiful we have black and white plovers that live on the church grounds at the end of my street!

Wow, thank you I did not know that, and have been pronouncing it wrong forever. Fascinating what we learn, listening and blogging!

It's funny how mispronunciations usually led to the differences in languages throughout the world.

You've done a great job of explaining the meaning and pronunciation of Honolulu. I've often heard it mispronounced also.
