At The Natatorium

A  L  O  H  A !

In 1921
 Hawaii’s Territorial Legislature
appropriated $250,000.
for the  construction of
 " A Living Memorial"

It was built to honor 101 who died,
 the 10,000 others from Hawaii,
who served in World War I.

It was a living memorial
 because through this arch was*
a 100 X 40 meter saltwater
 swimming pool!

Opening day, Aug. 24, 1927, was
a major event for Honolulu.

Favorite son, Duke Kahanamoku,
 [Olympic Gold Medalist &
godfather of modern surfing]
made the first ceremonial
swim before a capacity crowd
 of over 7,000 excited people.

It was also Duke's Birthday!

Kapiolani Park
named for a queen
is a popular place!

*The pool is a sorry mess
of broken cement.
"Repair it!" says one faction.

"It's environmentally passe`
let's restore the beach,
and make a beach volleyball
venue before the bleachers!"
Say others.

Everybody wanted the
Arch restored,
and so it was.

If this little angel could talk!

The cliffs are

Diamond Head Light House is the residence of Rear Admiral Cari B. Thomas, commander, Fourteenth Coast Guard District, whose area of responsibility spans over 12.2 million square miles encompassing the Hawaiian Islands, Guam, American Samoa, Saipan, Singapore and even Japan.

DH Light has been District commander's home since 1944.

"The Diamond Head Lighthouse has guided mariners to Honolulu for more than a hundred years. The original structure was erected in 1899 and the original ironwork of the watchroom and lantern are still in use. The 55-ft. tower we see today was built in 1917 and is constructed of reinforced concrete. The lighthouse can be seen as far away as 18 miles and the light shows a red sector to warn vessels away from the reefs of Waikīkī Beach." Link

"The Revenue Cutter [US Coast Guard] Lawrence sailed into Honolulu Harbor Sept. 4, 1849, escorted by Native Hawaiians in outrigger canoes. This marked the beginning of the U. S. Coast Guard presence in the Pacific. For the next 90 years, cutters from the West Coast routinely plied Hawaii’s waters on patrols. In 1939, the Fourteenth Coast Guard District was established ashore in Honolulu with 230 personnel.   Link

Pack out your trash.
Do NOT approach
 Hawaiian Monk Seals!

A Semi-private beach,
plenty of shade,
I LOVE THIS!

Sunny Kapiolani Park

A  L  O  H  A !
June 11, 1877, Kapiolani Park was
dedicated as the first public park in Hawaii.
The park boasts of open green space,
ponds, the Honolulu Zoo, sports
facilities, and the Waikiki Shell.

Diamond Head presides
over the park.
The Hawaiians of old
named the crater:
"Leahi."  LINK

Popular for sports, picnics,
and family events,
 the park is also a
favorite place for photographs.
