Celebration of Heroes

A L O H A From Honolulu!

First Olympic Surfing Gold Medal Winner:
Honolulu resident Carissa Moore!
With her, Hawaii's beloved father
of modern surfing:
Duke Kahanamoku, himself
a gold medal Olympic swimmer
(1924) and world icon.
"Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku. A Proud Native Hawaiian born to a minor noble family less than three years before the overthrow of
the Hawaiian Kingdom."

Every second that you spend
on doubting your worth,
every moment that you use
to criticize yourself; is
a second of your life wasted,
is a moment of your life
thrown away. -

- It's not like
you have forever, so
don't waste any of
your seconds, don't
throw even one of
your moments away.
    C. JoyBell C.

Great Catch!

 But
here's the catch:
The right place often
seems like the wrong place,
and the right time often
seems like the wrong time.
Mark Batterson

Everything is irrelevant but this:
to embrace life. To feel it.
To savor it. To love it.
   Marty Rubin

In youth, there can be
a feeling that time
moves too slowly. But,
as we age, the acceptance
that our time is limited
prompts the wise to
cherish each and
every moment.
Wayne Gerard Trotman

At The Natatorium

A  L  O  H  A !

In 1921
 Hawaii’s Territorial Legislature
appropriated $250,000.
for the  construction of
 " A Living Memorial"

It was built to honor 101 who died,
 the 10,000 others from Hawaii,
who served in World War I.

It was a living memorial
 because through this arch was*
a 100 X 40 meter saltwater
 swimming pool!

Opening day, Aug. 24, 1927, was
a major event for Honolulu.

Favorite son, Duke Kahanamoku,
 [Olympic Gold Medalist &
godfather of modern surfing]
made the first ceremonial
swim before a capacity crowd
 of over 7,000 excited people.

It was also Duke's Birthday!

Kapiolani Park
named for a queen
is a popular place!

*The pool is a sorry mess
of broken cement.
"Repair it!" says one faction.

"It's environmentally passe`
let's restore the beach,
and make a beach volleyball
venue before the bleachers!"
Say others.

Everybody wanted the
Arch restored,
and so it was.

If this little angel could talk!

January is cold.

The new year is
just finding it's legs
like a newborn
giraffe.

And then there are
the bills. . .

Some people remain
celebration-unsteady
too. Watch for them.

But today is the day:
The first normal
"Work Day"
"School Day"
after a protracted
Holiday Season.

Here is my tip
to YOU:

Just show up.

Just find your class.
Everyone there
is more disoriented
than you.

Look awake.
Make it through
the day.
It will all be easier
tomorrow.

And to those like
myself:
"They've gone now.
We can clean up,
drink a second cup,
take the camera
for a walk."

When you love
what you do
'Normal Time'
is the Best Time
of ALL!

I wish YOU
Love &

Hawaii's Creed

          A   L   O   H   A  !
 Duke Kahanamoku,
Prometheus of Modern Surfing

" In Hawaii,

we greet friends,

loved ones

or strangers

with Aloha,

which means love.

Aloha is the key word

to the universal spirit

of real hospitality,

which makes Hawaii

renowned

as the world's center

of understanding

and fellowship.

Try meeting

or leaving people

with Aloha.

You'll be surprised

by their reaction.

 I believe it

and it is my creed.

Aloha to you."

Duke & Babe

A L O H A !
 Duke Kahanamoku Beach

" Really great people
make you feel
that you too
can become great. "

Mark Twain

People still place lei on Duke's statue
& pose with him!

When Duke Kahanamoku was 10 years old,
  on April 30, 1900
the Organic Act made him
an American citizen.

He was named after his father,
Duke Halapu Kahanamoku,
who was christened "Duke" by Hawaiian Princess,
  Bernice Pauahi Bishop
in honor of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh,
who was visiting Hawaii at the time of the elder man's birth in 1869.
It was his name, not a title.

He went on to win Olympic gold,
to perform legendary rescues
and feats
befitting a Hawaiian Superman.

Surfers all over the world
consider him the father
of the modern sport.

He also used a stand-up board
and long paddle
when he grew older.

Stand-up paddling
is the fastest growing water sport
Today.

Here's Duke at Waikiki with Babe Ruth!
"I swing big,
with everything I've got.
I hit big or I miss big.
I like to live as big as I can."

Babe Ruth

Babe Ruth is famous
for his home run record,
but few realize
that for decades he also held
the record for strikeouts.

 He hit 714 home runs,
struck out 1,330 times
in his career.

He said:

 "Every strike
brings me closer
to the next home run."

When Hawaii's most famous citizen died,
the Honolulu Star-Bulletin called Duke:
"the Babe Ruth of swimming and surfing."

He will live forever
in the hearts of Hawaii
and of surfers everywhere.
