Rebels

A  L  O  H  A !
You win by not being
what they expect you to be.

In a world where kindness
is a rebellious act
let's all
become rebels!

Our Differences
are ever at war with
our Commonalities.
Be careful which
you feed.

Closer Look

A  L  O  H  A !
Sometimes the most beautiful things
are in front of our eyes, and we don’t
even notice because we’re either
too busy or too afraid to
take a closer look.
                      Katja Michael

Since you cannot do good to all,
you are to pay special attention
to those who, by the accidents
of time, or place, or circumstances,
are brought into closer
connection with you.
            Saint Augustine

Look at the sky.
We are not alone.
The whole universe is
friendly to us and conspires
only to give the best to
those who dream and work.

Always Often

Honolulu Dreaming

A  L  O  H  A !
Dreams say what they mean,
but they don't say it
in daytime language.
            Gail Godwin

I am going to see you
in every wall, every
street, every glass, in
every person, in every
wave of the sea
and smile.
          Suyasha Subedi

 Every great dream begins
with a dreamer. Always
remember, you have
within you the strength,
the patience, and
the passion to reach
for the stars to
change the world.
            Harriet Tubman

Trust your landmark and
run through the smoke.
It's going to open up
eventually.

Having a Comfort Level
with Ambiguity
is an inestimable skill.
Life is ALL ambiguity!
Nailing things down
amputates their whole truth.
Don't be quick
to classify, attack, defend.
Earn and inhabit
a Comfort Level
with Ambiguity
and life will improve.

Love Ya!

Paws And Reflect

Only write a story
that only you can write.
               Alysha Speer

There are so many incidents,
episodes, stories, and
epiphanies in the big city
by the sea. . .

To pause and witness
all the striving, suffering
and celebration -
even in your own mind -
is a litany for the night.

feels your fears

Bon Dancing In Honolulu

A  L  O  H  A !

The story of Honolulu's Mo`ili`ili neighborhood
is the history of modern Hawaii.
Japanese workers completing their
labor contracts on the plantations
stayed in Hawaii, moving into town
to start businesses and begin to
build a financial base for the family
[something denied slaves on the
USA continent - which is why we are
discussing reparations]

Ultimately, many settled in Mo`ili`ili
at the mouth of Manoa Valley
where the University of Hawaii
would come into being.

Notice the Burger King in the background/right
Many Japanese customs of food, language,
religion, and culture were preserved
among these Hawaii people. When
tourists from Japan began to visit
the islands in large numbers, they
found an old-fashioned Japanese community,
frozen in time in many ways,
and altogether charming.
Japanese food and culture are a big
part of HAWAII and all Hawaii people.

Every Summer, Buddhist and Shinto
shrines and temples throughout
the islands host BON dances.

show up with their tower, drums and
flutes. Recorded music is also played.
Andagi, fried noodles, teri chicken, hot dogs
and mochi are on offer. Many dance in
Japanese clothing.

At the BON dance,
we dance with our loved ones who
have passed. In Summer - BON season -
they are near. There are many stories
of dead loved one's being glimpsed among the
dancers, or making themselves known
in other ways. We all attend.

One need not be ethnic Japanese.
Old, young, and VERY old & young
all dance the eternal dances together.
