The Census Doesn't Count It

Life is about
creating yourself. George Bernard Shaw

Every person passing through this life
will unknowingly leave something
and take something away.
Most of this "something" cannot
be seen or heard or numbered
or scientifically detected or counted.
It's what we leave in the minds
of other people and what they
leave in ours. Memory.
The census doesn't count it.
Nothing counts without it.
Robert Fulghum

Two Lives

A L O H A From Honolulu!

We all have two lives.
The second one starts
when we realize
we only have one.
   Tom Hiddleston

When the going gets rough-
turn to wonder.
 Parker Palmer

Yawns half-suppressed,
with young energy blessed,
High-fives and fist bumps,
teamwork's the best.

Sure work's the reason,
but they are first Polynesian
Joking whispers, coffee cup sips,
Sharing stories with playful quips.

For laughter makes
their burdens light,
This team that "clicks"
 makes a future that's bright.

Work isn't just toil,
it's stories unfurled,
Connections that bind,
Tomorrow to be built.

Perfect and Real can Sometimes Unite

A L O H A From Honolulu!

Hand in hand, through
vibrant blooms they stroll,
Their symphony of laughter
makes the garden whole.

Memories bloom
like lilies in the breeze,
As their laughter dances
among the lovely trees.

Sharing deep glances
and quiet understanding,
Their lifetime of love,
forever still expanding.
Cloudia

Children see magic
because they look for it.
Christopher Moore

Platonic apple,
pristine and bright,
Unblemished by
a single bite.
It hangs in the void,
a perfect form,
Untouched by chaos,
safe from storms.

 Platonic Apple
untarnished, pure,
May yearn for what
it can't secure,
A touch of earth,
a hint of rot,
The bittersweet truths
of a world unsought.

It spins in the void,
a perfect design,
Unmarred by the flaws
of the earthly kind.
Perhaps in the spinning,
a truth comes to light,
That the perfect and real,
can sometimes unite.

Benevolent Arrangement

A L O H A From Honolulu!

Thanks to a benevolent arrangement of things, the greater part of life is sunshine. Thomas Jefferson

Beneath the morning banyan
lilting laughter hanging
Young souls meet
light as a feather,
Weaving dreams
in verdant weather.
Cloudia

The wise heart
resembles a mirror, reflecting everything
without becoming sullied. Confucius

By the bowl, a feathered huddle,
Not the dog,
but ducks in the puddle!
Fido waits, tail hanging low,
As his water dish
becomes a show.

With a final quack,
the ducks take flight,
Leaving the dog
to claim his right.
Cloudia

Sun bled gold paints the sky,
Distant shores!
Our yearning cry.
Engines up and humming loud
Adventure waits
beneath burnt clouds.

Inner Embraces

A L O H A From Honolulu!

The heart once burdened
now takes flight
Embraced by quiet

So live below

True riches grow

For happiness a path unfolds
When less is held

Let freedom dance
in simple things,
The wind's soft song,
the joy it brings.
Contentment blooms
in grateful heart,
Not bought or sold
a work of art.
Cloudia

The reason people find it
so hard to be happy is that
they always see the past
better than it was,
the present worse than it is,
and the future less resolved
than it will be.
 Marcel Pagnol

I’m a great believer in
common sense, and
the older I get I see that
common sense is
not that common.
If you’re lucky enough
to get old, I think you
should celebrate it.

Tower Morning Flower

 A L O H A From Honolulu!
O silhouette,
you steely spire,
The sun ignites,
sets clouds afire.
To churn above
in vibrant dance,
Promise another joyous chance.

Let darkness depart,
and worries take flight,
Embrace the new day
in spirits so bright.

With light
as your guide,
and hope
as your trend
May today
be a journey
that blesses
you, friend.

In the early morning frame
with a camera in my hand,
these streets are my domain
and my pockets full of sand.
[With apologies to Gordon Lightfoot]

Cucumis metuliferus, commonly called the African horned cucumber, horned melon, spiked melon, jelly melon, or kiwano, is an annual vine in the cucumber and melon family Cucurbitaceae. Its fruit has horn-like spines, hence the name "horned melon". The ripe fruit has orange skin and lime-green, jelly-like flesh. C. metuliferus is native to Southern Africa.

The sky is not my limit,
I am. T.F. Hodge

If you don’t learn constantly,
you don’t grow and you will wither.
Too many people wither on the vine.
Sure, it gets a little harder
as you get older, but new
experiences and new challenges
keep it fresh.
Iris Apfel
