We all understand
how wrong that is.
And yet, don't we ALL
commodify other people
based on what
we want from them?
If they are homeless,
smelly, too close, we
give them a
very low value.
If they look a certain way,
or control something
we need or want (job)
then we put a premium
on pleasing them.
When you really GET
that each person
is a whole world,
it changes your
whole world.
A person may not
have value to me,
but they have VALUE
as I do.
This means bothering to
RESPECT before
we shoot off our mouths
teaching, or correcting strangers..
It means
valuing,
noticing,
caring.
Even if we
DO nothing
different.
Seeing people
differently
heals our eyes;
and our hearts.

I agree 100% with everything you wrote on the valuation of people and an individuals usually wrong criteria for that valuation. It sums up quite fairly, I might add, why I have not done a single public performance or open mic for 3+ years now. Not because i became agoraphobic all of a sudden, but rather I found myself judging a noisy audience who wanted to talk over whomever was presenting their work. And in looking i saw how we judged affliction, no matter if it be addiction, joblessness or homelessness while looking at the pronouncing the judgement. Sad,sad, sad vain creatures we can be.
TRUE! And I find it hard to understand how so many people don't see that. It seems obvious to me. :))
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. I agree with what you said so much. It is what informs my values. Sometimes I get it wrong and sometimes I get it right, but that's what being human is all about.

Absolutely!! I agree 100%. The scariest thing to me is that I see these 18 to 22 years olds in my classes obsessing about developing their personal brands. I'm like, "Don't you realize you're commodifying yourself? Don't you know that your value far exceeds your so-called "brand" because of our common humanity?" Thanks for highlighting this huge social problem of our times.

That is so true! It's a shame we need reminding!
Truth. And when we open our eyes, hearts and minds we receive some pretty spectacular gifts.
When you first meet someone you form a idea of what that person is and will mean to you in the future but how often are we wrong, people who are still in your life 20 years down the track are not always the ones we like at first sight, as they say you can't always judge a book by it's cover.

I was thinking along similar lines today, Cloudia. How some people have no problem saying to others "I've got what I wanted out of you. Good-bye." I don't get that attitude.
