Our Town

Take the long way
by the sea. Where the road
meets the ocean,
peace begins. A beautiful drive
with salt air and
open sky. Coastal roads turn
miles into memories. Follow the shoreline
and let your mind drift.

Industrial alleys, and
faded roofs that eventually

The Hawaiian monk seal
(Neomonachus schauinslandi) is an endangered, earless seal species endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, making it one of the world’s rarest marine mammals and the only seal found in the tropics. Adult seals typically measure 6–7.5 feet in length, weigh 400–600 pounds, and are recognized for their sleek gray coats and solitary or small-group behavior. With a population of only about 1,400 individuals, Hawaiian monk seals face threats from habitat loss, entanglement, disease, and human disturbance and are protected by federal and state laws. The species plays a vital role in the local ecosystem but relies on ongoing conservation efforts for survival.

Remember to go outside everyday and walk on the Earth and look around at the beauty – the birds, the trees, the flowers blooming. Put your mind at ease by remembering the cycles of Nature, which are endless and renewing constantly. We are part of that Nature –
and are also renewing. Don’t lose faith in that which is timeless-your heart, soul and nature. We are all related Mitakuye Oyasin

I was curious and had to look it up.

“ Yes, Hawaiian monk seals can hear perfectly well, both underwater and in the air. They have internal ear canals but no external ear flaps”

I wasn't aware of the monk seal and it's precarious existence, Cloudia. How sad it would be to lose this wonderful creature. Blessings!

That Jim Kingwell painting, "Sweet Lahaina Night," is absolutely gorgeous, and the information on the Hawaiian monk seal is such a vital reminder of how precious and fragile our ecosystem is. Your final message about stepping outside and remembering that we, too, are constantly renewing like the cycles of nature is exactly what my soul needed to hear today. Mitakuye Oyasin.

I'm very much like the description Pixie gives of finding how taking the road along the shore gives such a great sense of peace and beauty. I used to live in Jacksonville FL and worked in St. Augustine (before moving there) and always chose to drive down the shore highway.

I wish the monk seals good luck, Cloudia. ;-)

I remember Lahaina, a beautiful painting. May the monk seal be around for a very long time, they need all the help they can get. Miles into memories, I love that saying, so many wise words here and beautiful images. Thank you Cloudia and Pixie.

You may have the last Jack restaurant around. I didn't know palm trees kept growing if their leaves were all gone. I see the lonely naked one in the Jack photo. Very charming Lahaina painting; certainly emits the wonders and view of the town. Saw a monk seal on the Kauai beach my last visit. Very peaceful, and stayed my distance of course. I didn't know about not looking into their eyes. Always something good to learn in the land of Aloha. Linda in Kansas

I watched a monk seal basking on a beach in Kauaii for a whole morning. The lifeguards put barriers around it to stop people from bothering it so it was very peaceful.

Beautiful mural of Lahaina's Front Street! I loved that town so much. What a devastating fire it was.
