Hillary's Hawaiian Surprise

A L O H A !

we enjoy

Makana Sings OUT

A L O H A !

 Our local slack-key celebrity Makana
used his performance at the APEC leaders' dinner
here in Waikiki on Saturday night
  as an opportunity
to get a pro-Occupy Wall Street movement
message to President Barack
  and the other world leaders.

Wearing an "Occupy with Aloha" t-shirt
under his black blazer
he sang his newest song, "We are the Many,"
 including lyrics such as:
"Ye come here gather 'round the stage;
The time has come for us to voice our rage."

"I didn't want to get shut down,"
said the 33-year-old.
So he kept it subtle.

Understandably afraid about singing the song,
he decided to do it anyway
because he believes APEC's leaders
are not representing common people.
"They are not representing the people they purport to represent."
But he told reporters afterwards
that he wanted to send his message
without being disrespectful or rude.

Here's a picture I took of Makana a while back
when he was stopped next to me at a red light.
Always a gentleman, he gave me a star-quality smile.
That post is HERE

Makana posted a video on You Tube
explaining his decision to perform the song.

You can also go to his FaceBook page
to let him know your opinion.

  Of course YOUr comments
are always valued
here!   Thanks!

Come Normal

A L O H A !

" I'm always looking for sounds
that are pleasing at the time.
The sound of a helicopter
is really annoying

and it's there to rescue you.
Then it sounds like
music. "

Truthfully,
Waikiki is always hosting
visitors
from all over the world.
But having world-leader
security
has been stressful.
(see recent posts
if you don't know what I'm talking about)

When to leave-
How to go-
How to get home-
How to complete mundane tasks-
The road closures
& motorcades-

It will be SO nice
to be "just us & visitors"
again!

Thanks for looking in.
YOUr comment is valued.

World Meets Hawaii

A L O H A Warms World Press
Notice how many say that Hawaii reminds them of home!

Hu Jintao in Waikiki 歡迎胡錦濤

Nihau      歡迎胡錦濤       ALOHA!

Mornings in Waikiki
are usually peaceful.

But my walk to the post office
yesterday morning
was very different.

Hillary Clinton, US Secretary of State,
was speaking at my alma mater
University of Hawaii;
Treasury Secretary Geithner
was holding a meeting nearby.
But this was
BIGGER!

The BIG show
was heading right for Waikiki.
Vacationers/holiday makers
looked on with interest.

Honolulu Police Officers
in their APEC Aloha finery
were there:
President of the People's Republic of China
HU JINTAO
was on his way!

Local Chinese-Americans
were present for the big day

The pride of this young couple
was evident!

Motorcades are always a quick let-down.
The cheers of the crowd were exciting.

Now:
How To Get To the Post Office!

 True!

Below
is a slide-show
of events.

Thanks for visiting.
YOU
are a dignitary
here!

Comment for the record?

Apec Coming!

A L O H A ?

  Revered Hawaiian scholar Paki
explained the  spiritual meaning
represented by each letter of the word Aloha:

A
stands for AKAHAI,
meaning kindness, expressed with tenderness

L
 is for LOKAHI,
 meaning unity,
expressed with harmony.

O
 is for OLU`OLU,
 meaning agreeable,
 expressed with pleasantness.

H
stands for HA`AHA`A,
 meaning humility,
 expressed with modesty.

A
 stands for AHONUI,
 meaning patient and persevering.

The key to life is to live ALOHA everyday!

" By learning to discover
and value our ordinariness,
 we nurture a friendliness
toward ourselves and the world
 that is the essence
of a healthy soul. "

Thomas Moore

Now THIS is gonna be a challenge!

" Let's just face it:

" Shooting here is far better than in Detroit,

The place is magnificent,

the locals are great. "

George Clooney

on filming in Hawaii
(sorry Detroit poets/friends)

> < } } ( ° >

I live
in the most densely populated neighborhood
in the Hawaiian Islands,
which means the largest collection
of humans
for thousands of miles
of open Pacific.

We are ready to greet visitors
and we do it every day!

When the President holidays
on Oahu,
in his place of birth
and growing up years,
we feel protective of him
and are mostly philosophical
about the motorcades
and street closings.

Plus, he stays on the
other side, the Windward.
And his visits to town-side,
like taking the girls to
the zoo,
are not too disruptive.

We even welcome officials
from other nations
and afford them
the same courtesy and
protection.

But on November 7th
through the 13th,
21 heads of state
including our President
will be meeting
ALL around here!

The Hawaii Convention Center
is right across the Ala Wai Canal,
and just under my window.
NO paddling for one week!
Already restrictions are being explained
to us.

There will be closed streets,
closed near-shore waters,
and all boats in the Ala Wai Harbor
will be restricted to their berths.
Residents there
(as we were so recently)
will have security check-points
to enter and leave their neighborhood.
No parking for surfers.
The gasoline station
nearest to me
will be restricted to
"law enforcement & military."

And there WILL be demonstrations.

Meanwhile, the tourist Mecca of
Waikiki
with our dozens of hotels
and thousands of residents
will have
NO deliveries by truck
(an every day thing)
for the duration!

Stock up now
(I will)

It feels a bit like a target
is painted on my
paradise.

On the other hand,
this will be the safest,
most secure island
in the world
for one week.

Perhaps I'll visit the demonstrators.
More later.

And thanks for visiting today!
How would YOU feel
about such a summit
in YOUR neighborhood?
Tell us in comments,
                                          Warmly, cloudia
