Apec Coming!

A L O H A ?

  Revered Hawaiian scholar Paki
explained the  spiritual meaning
represented by each letter of the word Aloha:

A
stands for AKAHAI,
meaning kindness, expressed with tenderness

L
 is for LOKAHI,
 meaning unity,
expressed with harmony.

O
 is for OLU`OLU,
 meaning agreeable,
 expressed with pleasantness.

H
stands for HA`AHA`A,
 meaning humility,
 expressed with modesty.

A
 stands for AHONUI,
 meaning patient and persevering.

The key to life is to live ALOHA everyday!

" By learning to discover
and value our ordinariness,
 we nurture a friendliness
toward ourselves and the world
 that is the essence
of a healthy soul. "

Thomas Moore

Now THIS is gonna be a challenge!

" Let's just face it:

" Shooting here is far better than in Detroit,

The place is magnificent,

the locals are great. "

George Clooney

on filming in Hawaii
(sorry Detroit poets/friends)

I live
in the most densely populated neighborhood
in the Hawaiian Islands,
which means the largest collection
of humans
for thousands of miles
of open Pacific.

We are ready to greet visitors
and we do it every day!

When the President holidays
on Oahu,
in his place of birth
and growing up years,
we feel protective of him
and are mostly philosophical
about the motorcades
and street closings.

Plus, he stays on the
other side, the Windward.
And his visits to town-side,
like taking the girls to
the zoo,
are not too disruptive.

We even welcome officials
from other nations
and afford them
the same courtesy and
protection.

But on November 7th
through the 13th,
21 heads of state
including our President
will be meeting
ALL around here!

The Hawaii Convention Center
is right across the Ala Wai Canal,
and just under my window.
NO paddling for one week!
Already restrictions are being explained
to us.

There will be closed streets,
closed near-shore waters,
and all boats in the Ala Wai Harbor
will be restricted to their berths.
Residents there
(as we were so recently)
will have security check-points
to enter and leave their neighborhood.
No parking for surfers.
The gasoline station
nearest to me
will be restricted to
"law enforcement & military."

And there WILL be demonstrations.

Meanwhile, the tourist Mecca of
Waikiki
with our dozens of hotels
and thousands of residents
will have
NO deliveries by truck
(an every day thing)
for the duration!

Stock up now
(I will)

It feels a bit like a target
is painted on my
paradise.

On the other hand,
this will be the safest,
most secure island
in the world
for one week.

Perhaps I'll visit the demonstrators.
More later.

And thanks for visiting today!
How would YOU feel
about such a summit
in YOUR neighborhood?
Tell us in comments,
                                          Warmly, cloudia

How would I feel?
very concerned!
Unfortunately,in Italy, events and meetings of top politicians become urban guerrillas ...( Black Bloc)...... I love the peace and serenity ....
Interesting the meaning of Aloha!
I wish you a happy weekend full of joy and serenity!
A hug!

having lived in Manhattan, I understand the change in traffic flow & gridlock. But reading the list of "US State Dept." restrictions, I recommend doing a housebound "retreat" for the time they are here. Just reading through part of that page made my head spin.
I'm surprised that your building (with that view) is not under some kind of surveilance or the like. All that having been said - Anywhere that our President is - is the best place on Earth - may god protect him from ignorant fools and keep him safe.

"A stands for AHONUI,

AHONUI is my new personal mantra.

Thank you.

Good Luck with Protected Paradise. You could rent your boat to the security dudes as their headquarters. No truck deliveries to hotels! The diplomats better use the same towel during their stay and catch their own fish for supper! DrumMajor

Am sure that your island will treat them with peace and happiness.

And no, I don't even dare to imagine such an event over here.

Please have you all a good Sunday.

I think I would stock up on books, and hunker down, enjoy the view and wait it out. Whatever you choose to do, enjoy it.

In my neighborhood the only main street would be impacted and many of us couldn't leave our homes!

However, the excitement about the event would trump any inconveniences.
Besides, the merchants would finally get ahead!

I like me too the meaning of the word
Aloha. In the town where I live politicians don't come for meetings.
Sorry for your inconvenience.
Wish you a nice Sunday!
:)))

I know EXACTLY how you feel Cloudia, at the end of October, next Friday Perth will be hosting CHOGM (Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting)being opened by Queen Elizabeth and Perth has been in training for the tightest security for weeks now. Roads will be closed, areas restricted and I will probably keep well away from it. And yes, the protestors are getting themselves all geared up for it too..hmmm maybe I will venture near for some photos.

We have had constuction taking place on our main street for almost two years...detours all over the place that add miles to arriving at your destination. You just adapt. The key is being warned in advance so you can be prepared. The summit has to be held somewhere and "paradise" has been chosen. I'm all for it being a safe and productive experience, but totally understand the concerns of the locals. Hopefully it can take place in a peaceful manner with good results. You are going to have an amazing view.

Can you stay on the boat while the shindig is going on?

George is right!

(though it probably wasn't gracious of him to put such a fine point on it...he could simply have said how nice the Islands are, and have left Detroit out of it.)

The Toronto summit was last year and plenty disruptive for those of who needed to navigate the city. I stayed away.

I love the meaning of Aloha.
