Important Enough

A L O H A From Honolulu!

You have to
forgive yourself
for not knowing
what you didn't know
before you learned it.

You're always here,
in my heart,
between each breath,
folded in the lines
of my palm.

capable of silliness -

-can be called

day in your life.
It will be
important enough.

Over The Fence

A  L  O  H  A   from   Honolulu!
The last touristy, crappy,
cheap bazaar,
that WAS the
International Marketplace
is no more.
Becoming transformed
behind the magician's fence
into another upscale expensive
SPEND-A-RAMA!

But the venerable banyan
that has seen so much:
drunken sailors,
lovebirds of all ages,
been crowned with
nesting rats for decades,
is being revived
as a pampered
Luxe-Lady.

Nesting for
an entirely other
breed of rodent
bearing the
Golden Token
- to enjoy their
Golden Moment -
Providing that
square foot
dollar quotient.

And still the sun
pours down on all
like lotion.

Or is that
just my notion?

Thanks for
Your Patience!

A Secret Obsession

A  L  O  H  A !
                                 [WARNING: Material of Aviation Nature]

" The natural function of the wing
 is to soar upwards
and carry that which is heavy
up to the place where
dwells the race of gods.
More than any other thing
that pertains to the body
it partakes of the
 nature of the divine."
                                   Plato

" There is no sport equal
to that which aviators enjoy
while being carried through the air
on great white wings. "
Wilbur Wright, 1905

"No one can realize
how substantial the air is,
until he feels its
supporting power
beneath him.
It inspires
confidence at once. "
                           Otto Lilienthal

" We returned home,
after these experiments,
with the conviction that
sailing flight was not
the exclusive prerogative
of birds. "
                   Otto Lilienthal, 1874

" Can the magic
of flight
ever be carried
by words?
I think not.
                       Michael Parfit,
                              Smithsonian magazine,
                           May 2000

Walking in Waikiki
I spotted a
Japanese woman,
a visitor
(we can tell)
 blonde Mohawk
sprouting from
her shaved head.

She wore.
denim shorts,
and a studded
leather collar.
In contrast
to the beach-clad
throng.

If she had been "young"
I would have smiled
and reminisced,
but she looked
at least forty,
So I wanted
to talk to her.

Suddenly, a fighter jet
thundered low overhead.

She turned to watch it
(I was behind)
and said "Cool!"

"Yeah it is"
I agreed.

We shared a smile,
so we had our
moment after all;

Two overgrown
adolescents
in love
with cool stuff
that goes
F A S T !

We now return you
to our normal
sedate
fare.

Thank You!

No Tourists

Aloha!
Welcome to Waikiki Three Hula Dancers Weclome You

"Prayer is meaningless unless it is subversive, unless it seeks to overthrow and ruin the pyramids of callousness, hatred, opportunism, falsehoods."

Abraham Joshua Heschel

Another Domestic Hawaiian Rainbow

"If I had to live my life again, I would have made a rule to read some poetry and listen to some music at least once every week. The loss of these tastes is a loss of happiness."

Concieted Carp

"You can get a whole lot more done with a kind word and a gun than you can with a gun alone."

Al Capone

There are No tourists in Hawaii!
That's right. We call them "visitors" as in Hawaii Visitors Bureau. I've always liked that old fashioned way of thinking about folks from elsewhere. It speaks of our local pride, identification with our island home, our traditional spirit of welcome. They all manage to hang on somehow – even in our topsy-turvy day. The real Waikiki, the genuine Hawaii, they still exist. Some visitors are fooled by our modern tempo and amenities, but for those with a heart to see beyond the "attractions" there is authenticity. The key is to bring some of your own along with you. . .
