Ulu (Breadfruit)
(Artocarpus altilis),
Tree of the mulberry family
(Moraceae).
It's large fruits are a
staple food of the South Pacific
and other tropical areas.
Breadfruit contains considerable
amounts of starch and is seldom
eaten raw. It may be roasted, baked,
boiled, fried, or dried and
ground into flour.
The leaves and breadfruit itself
are a historic and popular
Hawaiian Quilt Pattern.
The breadfruit is a superb tree,
about 60 feet high, with
deep green, shining leaves,
a foot broad, sharply and
symmetrically cut, worthy,
from their exceeding beauty
of form, to take the place of the
acanthus in architectural ornament

That first image is me! LOL
Today is breadfruit day! I thought that first picture of the fruit on the plant was a tennis ball wedged into a big plant. Cool post :) Does Pixie like to eat breadfruit?
The mural is good fun.
Thanks for telling me about breadfruit and Ulu! And showing me both the real thing and the wonderful design used on fabrics!
All nice to know never heard of breadfruit.
...yes, truly appreciate life!
Heart warming photos and words!
Mahalo for the lesson about the ulu! I didn't realize that the popular Hawaiian quilt pattern belonged to the interesting plant. Love the ulus running across the wall. Pixie seems content. Linda in Kansas
I have never seen a breadfruit and I have been to Hawaii many times. Interesting looking for sure. Have a nice day today.
I would love to be on that beach with that rainbow, Cloudia. ;-)
I'm so glad to be able to read your blog again, Cloudia, as the family has all returned home. What a great time we had!
Hello,

I had never heard of breadfruit, how interesting. I like the mural too. Thanks for participating in Monday Murals Cloudia.
The quilt patterns are quite fascinating, along with all the history of Hawaii.
Love Pixie's thinking!
