Hawaii Photo of the Day 🦋

History - Me - Yesterday ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"It is believed that the Hawaiian Islands
were uninhabited until around 400 – 500 A.D.,
when the Polynesians arrived. Skilled mariners,
Polynesians had a long history of exploration and
settlement of other lands."

In the 1970s, Hawaiians built
their first modern voyaging canoe,
HOKULE`A  and voyaged to Tahiti!

You can learn more about this
wonderful revival, even hear the song:

Yesterday Sept 16 2018 the second
Hawaiian Voyaging Canoe in known history
entered San Francisco Bay!
The voyaging canoe Hikianalia stopped in
Marin [unannounced] at the
Coast Guard Station Golden Gate before
entering the city for the welcoming celebration
by the local First Nation People
and other dignitaries.

Master Navigator Nainoa Thompson (L) Link

The canoe and crew were still kapu. ["Taboo"]
which means that until they are officially welcomed
by the people of the land they visit, they are considered
to still be in the realm of the gods, not fully back
into the world of human activity yet.
They have made a mystic voyage!

Husband and I got to be at the canoe
with no public, just us, and to
interact respectfully with the crew.
Friendly “Alohas” were heard.

I even got to pull the Rope as they were leaving,
and Shout Mahalo Ke Akua* as they
pulled out into the bay, getting
quite a nice response
from some of the crew..
We were even waving our Hawaiian flag.

What a day! I'll be telling the story
for the rest of my life!
But I'm telling YOU first!

together in spirit.”

Morning Near And Far

"You've got a lot of choices.
If getting out of bed
in the morning is a chore
and you're not smiling
on a regular basis,
try another choice."

"Who are you?,
said the Caterpillar...
I-I hardly know, Sir,
just at present," Alice
replied rather shyly,

I think I must have changed
several times since then."

Together Instead

A  L  O  H  A !
 Get lost in love, and
hate won’t find you.

We all have a core of
basic goodness, of
basic Humanity.
The question is how
deep you have to
go to find it.

Childish people try to sound
Complex, adult & important.
People of real understanding
Make the profound simple,
Often with a lively element
Of play and humor.

We walk around fighting
over our clashing illusions.
Let's WAKE together instead!

My Two Landmarks

A  L  O  H  A !
Diamond Head / Mt. Leahi

Diamond Head is the symbol of
Honolulu, Hawaii & Waikiki.

Golden Gate Bridge - Towards San Francisco

The Golden Gate Bridge
is the world-wide emblem
of San Francisco

Diamond Head Entire, From Tantalus

Elevation‎: ‎762 ft (232 m)
Age of rock‎: ‎200,000 years

Almost Entire - From Marin Headlands

8,981 feet long (1.7 miles)

Contains about 88,000 tons of steel.

Total weight of the bridge is 887,000 tons.

Approximately 80,000 miles of wire inside
each of the two steel cables.

The towers stand 726 feet above the water and
500 feet above street level. They weigh
44,000 tons each and are 4,200 feet
apart from each other.

The bridge is 90 feet wide. Street level is
about 220 feet above the water.

1848 - Captain John C. Fremont names the cleft in the Coastal Mountain Range opening onto San Francisco Bay the Golden Gate. The bridge derives its name from the land feature and not its color.
1916 - James H. Wilkins comes up with the idea to connect northern California to the San Francisco peninsula.
December 1924 - The United States War Department, the government entity responsible for the entire area surrounding the strait, approves the project.
1928 - The Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District is formed and Joseph B. Strauss is appointed as architect/designer.
January 5, 1933 - Construction begins.
May 27, 1937 - The bridge is completed and opens to pedestrians. The bridge is built at a cost of approximately $35.5 million and comes in under budget and ahead of schedule.
May 28, 1937 - The bridge is opened to vehicles."

Me & Diamond Head

“I live in my own little world.
But its ok, they know me here.”
       Lauren Myracle

Driving across the G.G.

"I have two homes, like someone
who leaves their hometown
and/or parents and then
establishes a life elsewhere.
They might say that
they're going home
when they return to see
old friends or parents,
but then they go home as well
when they go to where
they live now.
Sarajevo is home,
Chicago is home."
              Aleksandar Hemon
