Today they get into the canoes.
Over a thousand of them will be taken offshore.

They have been carefully hand-raised
in a hatchery at Sand Island's Anuenue fisheries research station here on Oahu.

Now they have a job to do:
to restore the natural reef in Kaneohe Bay.

"aggressive seaweed"
is a growing problem for the fragile reef ecosystem
 in the bay.

(Incidentally, that is the Kaneohe High School Mascot:
"The Aggressive Seaweeds."
Nah! Just kidding!)

“This is the first time we have been able to raise urchins
in captivity; very few places in the world ever do this,”
said Christy Martin with the Coordinating Group
 on Alien Species.

Urchins?

March!

State aquatics resource scientist David Cohen

and his colleagues collected adult specimens from the wild

and used their sperm and eggs

 to propagate the microscopic creatures

with a lot of trial and error

transferring the urchins from tank to tank as they grew.

Cohen calls them his babies,

 and they eat a lot.

“We give them as much variety as we can.

We use native seaweeds and we fatten them up

until they can get out on the reefs and do their jobs,”

 He says.

We needn't  worry about the area being overrun with urchins, though,

“We can actually herd these guys like cows and goats.

We keep them where we want them
and if they migrate to
another area,

we pick them up and move them elsewhere,”
 Cohen said.

The urchin release later today will happen
 in water 2-6 feet deep.

His "babies' are not very poky, Cohen says.

"If you happen to step on them,
you are more likely to hurt the urchin than to get hurt yourself."

Found: Bush's One Good Thing

Aloha! Come on in.

This is Diamond Head Road. See the road sign?

It goes all around the crater and is a favorite "cruising" place to see and be seen. Pop star Rhianna has been seen bicycling here recently. Hope she's feeling better!

Never saw these before!

In the final days of his administration, Bush the Younger did something surprising. He declared the pristine Northwestern Hawaiian Islands a Marine National Monument.

This paradise at the far side of our archipelago is called:

Papahanaumokuakea.

Recently NOAA reported that 15 different species of whales, more than expected, frequent the large, watery "park."

80 types of coral, almost half of them found only in Hawaiian waters, also homestead these waters.

Here in Waikiki, with the near shore waters full of cavorting humans, and party boats jostling for sunset views just beyond the reef ,

I like to think of the whales and their buddies

lounging in their own V.I.P. enclave.

Perhaps some day I'll untie from the dock

and sail out to visit them. After all,

I too am found only in Hawaiian waters. . .

Note: My modem self-destructed late Thursday requiring a "swap-out," hence: no Friday post.
Sorry. It's just a tale of two modems, I guess. . . But I'm BACK, Baby!

It is generally agreed that the world's coral reefs are stressed to a dangerous degree and may even be in danger of disappearing entirely. This interests me because these isles that I love were designed and built by a committee of coral and fiery lava. The plants, animals, & humans all came late to this party. Geologically speaking, we're just the hair and make-up of Hawaii.

Aside from the gargantuan cost of a modern war ship, the big issue with the recent grounding of the USN Port Royal off of Honolulu Airport is damage to the reef. Local divers whisper that damage to both ship and reef are much more extensive than reported. Like "build a new warship" extensive! But the reef could take hundreds of years to recover - if it can.

The real tragedy of extinction is losing the treasures we have not yet comprehended fully. This unknown bounty of lost knowledge is a blank check we have just about thrown away un-cashed.

For example, it had long been thought that the reefs in our Hawaiian waters were no more than a century or three in age. Actually, scientists using mini-subs, OK "Submersible Vehicles," have recently discovered that some of our local Leiopathes corals are more like FORTY TWO CENTURIES old! They are among the oldest living things on this planet right up there with California's five thousand year old bristlecone pine trees. A younger species of coral, the youthful Gerardia, has been discovered to be a mere two thousand, seven hundred years old. It's not even collecting coral social security yet! (Coral reefs are communities of social creatures.)

What else is hiding right under our noses (and waves)?
