Remember Rod McKuen
("Listen to the Warm")
that rarest of all things:
a popular, mainstream poet?
Before him
it was Robert Frost,
rewarding the average reader
but not disappointing the scholar either.
Who do we have that is like that today?
Kanye West?
(Just kidding!)
Maya Angelou
is considered political.
There is very little that we ALL subscribe to.
The Simpsons,
Celebrating their 25th year, is the longest-running show on TV.
The characters are beloved (and bemoaned) all over the world.
Don't have a COW,
Man!
Perhaps there are no longer "mainstream" anything?
My favorite poets of today are much closer than some pedestal
on the top of a mountain somewhere.
In fact they are bloggers like you & me!
You can even visit them in an instant by clicking:

"Freezing Friends"....LOL.
I will be healed.
Is comfortable.
And I want to go.
I can hear you!
As always,
Aloha greetings from Cairo! :)

I loved this post. Listen to the Warm is a great title.
You made me think of two contemporary poets that I realize are actually regional--Billy Collins (NY) and Mary Oliver (Cape Cod). Oops.
You get to keep the warm for the kind words kiddo.
The chill of the day is always warmed by honest words given freely.
Yes, the our great poets are like Lupus in Flight and Flux Capacitor. And even Matty's Thoughts.
Thank you for an enjoyable post.
It is heart warming to see your sand, sun and the soulfulness! We anticipate freezing rain today. The wood stove burns merrily.
Aloha, friend!
Aloha!
Yup. I'm freezin up here! :) Great post. Very warming.
....I am sitting here grinning from ear to ear. Thanks, friend!!!
I knew "Listen To The Warm" right away cos I used to have it! "Stanyan Street & Other Sorrows" as well. And I had (and still have) a book of poems by the singer Janis Ian, too.
My mother has never cared about poetry at all, and my father, though he was a great reader, preferred non fiction. But for whatever reason, he had a framed portrait of Robert Frost over his desk--the one I am sitting at right now--with the poem "The Road Less Traveled". His youngest child read it again and again and took it to heart.
I have always set out to make my poetry accessible to anyone. That was my mentor Emily's way...and it is mine, too.
Mwahs from the freezing mainland, my friend!
lovely pictures! btw, thank you so much for the gift. it was lovely.
Yes, since blogging I've discovered a lot of writing talent all around me. It's closer than I had thought.
It's warming up! We are no longer freezing - during the day at least - but it is still by no means warm.
Very warming.

You are each gorgeous!
Thanks so much for visiting me here in da spiral :-)
i wanna be gorgeous too.
why i come here
cj
Those warm beaches are looking enticing! And at the moment my hands and feet are freezing!
I'm looking out over a landscape of snow and debating when to put on my parka, mega-boots, neck warmer, Elmer Fudd hat (with flaps!), gloves and probably an extra sweatshirt or two so I can take the dog for his walk.
I don't necessarily mind the cold - Canadians, after all, are genetically programmed to enjoy crisp, winter days - but I do miss the carefree come-and-go attitude of the summer. I like being able to transition out of the house without having to spend 10 minutes suiting up.
Soon...
In the meantime, I have these lovely images and words, shared by a friend who always knows how to say and do the right thing.
I heard that the singer Jewel writes poetry, although I like her music I haven't read her poetry. Maybe it's good?
Shay/Fireblossom is my favorite poet too. A highlight of my day is popping over to her blog to relish what's she's written. Good choice, Cloudia. I will have to check out Walking Man.
Ahhh, Rod McKuen! All the memories of the dorm, reading to each other, loving his poetry and probably him too. Thanks for thinking of us as we shiver, my tropical friend! :O)
....She is my favorite too :-)
When it is cold outside we cuddle to warm up. That brings spice back into our lives. Stay warm, my friend.
gr8 community here!
What North American teeager in the 60s didn't know Rod McKuen. I had at least a couple of his books and one of them was indeed Listen To the Warm. This was a nostalgic tug. Thanks for that. :)
Yes, great choices.
Let me add Erin at Inthroughthebackdoor.blogspot.com
There is a lot of talent out there. Thanks for the links.
loved the pics and your conclusion rings so true!

aloha!
I've been wondering who is Cloudia?
(Like opera aria "Who is Sylvia?")
But now that I have been here, it is not difficult to decide to return. And one of your favorites is Shay. I believe (see, I read also!) you are one of HER favorite Peeps. Lucky you...and she.
Blessings to both--and others as well.
Nice lovely Waikiki! Love your pictures. TQ
I loved Rod McKuen. Thank you for reminding me. But listen to the warm? My mother has been sitting in her livingroom with a sweatshirt, sweater, blanket and socks. I've even given her my winter ear muffs from Illinois to wear. My daughter would never believe this. Illinois is freezing right now. I'll have to show her how her Hawaii grandmother is suffering in the 60 degree cold.
yes, we Hawaii people are freezing under 70 degrees @ night!
thanks each of you for visiting
I'm a big Fireblossom/Shay fan! And I love Rod McKuen.
Have a great weekend.
xo
Ah yes, I remember Rod McKuen. I had a copy of 'Listen to the Warm.'
I hope everyone is warm and safe!
