Amen. and it seems to be becoming more futile by the day.
Henry Ford for all of his faults, of which he had many, never as the wealthiest man in the world at the time, put a single nickle into the stock market. He never fell for the hype of "It can only go up from here so mortgage everything and become a millionaire overnight."
Maybe it was because of the amount of money he had and his dream to build the Ford Rouge Plant that kept him away but more likely because he knew who was behind the market and what syndicates dictated where it went, both up and down. Personally I think it was because Durant (formed General Motors), a man he despised was so involved (lost 3 fortunes) that was his ultimate deciding factor.
The odd thing is that if you look at the banks involved in the '28-'29 crash they all carry the same names as the ones involved in the 2008 crash.
The worst part of the earlier collapse was that only 15% of all Americans had anything at all invested in the market, but with no bank regulations the local town bankers took their customers money they had on deposit and made stock market bets with it. When the syndicates burst the bubble the margin calls went out and the bankers investment were backed by the depositors money and was paid to the syndicates that held the notes.
Just as an aside Groucho, Harpo and Zeppo Marx combined lost nearly 3/4 million dollars in less than two weeks. That's what it was like then and in '09 how many people who were forced into 401(k) plans lost 100 times that much?
