The Hawaiian Monk Seal, known in Hawaiian as ʻīlio-holo-i-ka-uaua (“dog that runs in rough seas”), is among the most endangered seal species and serves as Hawaii’s state mammal. Only about 1,600 remain worldwide. These native seals are mostly solitary and spend much of their lives hunting in the ocean. Adults typically reach 6 to 7 feet in length and weigh 400 to 600 pounds, with females often larger than males. They are strong divers, able to stay underwater for up to 20 minutes, and can live 25 to 30 years in the wild. Found only in the Hawaiian Islands, their populations are split between the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and the main islands. They feed on bottom-dwelling prey such as reef fish, eels, squid, octopus, and crustaceans.
